Babak was born around 795 or 798 in Bilalabad. This area was part of the Mimadh district in Azerbaijan. His early life involved many different types of work. Before he was twelve, he worked as a cowherd. Later, he served as a groom and servant for an Arab warlord named Shibl ibn al-Muthanna al-Azdi. During this time, he learned to play the lute and recite poetry. He also worked as a fruit vendor in a village. Eventually, he moved to the city of Tabriz and worked for Muhammad ibn Rawwad Azdi.

Babak's path to leadership began when he worked for a local landlord named Javidhan. Javidhan was a leader in the Khurramite movement in Azerbaijan. During a conflict with another leader named Abu Imran, Javidhan was mortally wounded. Babak succeeded him as the leader of the movement around 816 or 817. It was likely during this time that he changed his name from al-Hasan to Babak. He became a highly spiritual person who respected Zoroastrian heritage. He worked to unite various Iranian leaders to form a front against the Caliphate.

The Khorramdin movement was not limited to just one small area. While Babak's base was in Azerbaijan, Khorramis were scattered across many regions. They lived in places like Tabarestan, Khorasan, Isfahan, and even Armenia. Babak's rebellion lasted for more than twenty years. He used a mountain stronghold known as Babak Castle to protect his forces.

To stop the rebellion, the Caliph al-Mu'tasim sent his best general, Afshin. Afshin used organized strategies to fight Babak. He rebuilt fortresses and used a relay system to protect supply caravans. In 835 or 836, Afshin tried to surprise Babak's forces. Although Babak escaped this encounter, the pressure on his movement grew. In 837 or 838, Afshin followed strict military instructions to capture Babak Castle. Although Babak tried to escape the castle, his movement was eventually broken.

The rebellion ended in January 838 when Babak was betrayed. His defeat marked the end of a long period of resistance. The movement had been a major threat to the stability of the Abbasid Caliphate. Babak's uprising demonstrated the deep strength of ancestral Iranian feelings. It showed how much people valued their local language and culture. Even though the rebellion failed, it remains a notable part of the history of the region.
