Baalbek is an ancient and significant city in Lebanon.
The history of this settlement is incredibly deep. Evidence shows habitation on the hilltop of Tell Baalbek for at least 8,000 to 9,000 years. The location was ideal because it was well-watered. A stream ran from the Rās al-ʿAyn spring toward the citadel. During the spring, meltwater from the Anti-Lebanons created many small rills. This fertile valley sat along a major route from Tyre to Palmyra. These factors made the site wealthy and important from very early on.
Religious life in Baalbek has transformed many times. During the Canaanite period, people worshipped the Heliopolitan Triad. This group included the male god Baʿal, his consort Astarte, and their son Adon. The site of the current Temple of Jupiter was likely the center of this worship. Later, Alexander the Great conquered the city in 334 BCE. He renamed it Heliopolis, which is Greek for "Sun City."
The Roman Empire brought massive changes to the city's architecture. The Romans built one of the largest temple complexes in their entire empire.

Many different cultures and religions shaped the city over time. The city underwent changes during the Christianization period. Following the Arab conquest in the 7th century, Islam rose to prominence. The city also faced destruction from Mongol attacks. A series of earthquakes also caused damage to the area. These events led to a decline in the city's importance during the Ottoman period. Today, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a status it received in 1984.
Baalbek is a major destination for modern tourism.

The city is also a significant political center. Baalbek is considered part of the heartland for the group Hezbollah. It is known as a political stronghold for them. During the Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon from 1982 to 2000, Hezbollah gained control of the city. In the 2022 Lebanese general election, the Amal-Hezbollah list won 9 out of 10 seats in the governorate. The region has seen significant military activity in recent years.
