In 2018, he became the first Indian to win the Pritzker Prize. This is like a Nobel Prize for architects. He also received the Royal Gold Medal from the UK in 2022. After returning to India in 1954, he supervised Corbusier's projects in Ahmedabad. These included the Villa Sarabhai and the Sanskar Kendra. Later, he worked with Louis Kahn on the Indian Institute of Management campus in Ahmedabad. These mentors, along with historic Indian monuments, inspired his unique style. He blended European and American ideas with local traditions.

In 1955, Doshi established his own studio called Vastu-Shilpa. This name relates to environmental design. He was also a dedicated educator and institution builder.

He founded the School of Architecture in Ahmedabad in 1962. He also served as the founding dean of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology. This project earned him the Aga Khan Award for Architecture between 1993 and 1995. Doshi focused on sustainability and making sure people felt a sense of belonging. He believed that people might need to modify their homes as their needs changed. His work provided a model for alternative development. In 2007, he received the first-ever Global Award for Sustainable Architecture for this work.

In 2018, he became the first Indian architect to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This prize is considered the Nobel equivalent for the architecture field. He also received the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2022. In India, the government awarded him the Padma Shri in 1976, the Padma Bhushan in 2020, and the Padma Vibhushan posthumously in 2023. These awards recognize his massive impact on the world.

His legacy continues through his family and his institutions. Doshi married Kamala Parikh in 1955, and they had three daughters. His daughters pursued careers in textile design, architecture, and painting. His granddaughter, Khushnu Panthaki Hoof, is an architect. She currently leads the Balkrishna Doshi Archives and the Vastu-Shilpa Foundation. She and her husband run Studio Sangath. Doshi passed away in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on 24 January 2023. He was 95 years old at the time of his death.
