The name Azerbaijan has deep historical roots. It likely derives from Atropates. He was a Persian satrap under the Achaemenid Empire. He was later reinstated as the satrap of Media under Alexander the Great. The name might mean "Protected by the (Holy) Fire." This is linked to the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism. The name evolved over many millennia. It moved from Middle Persian to New Persian. Eventually, it became the present-day name. In 1918, the government of Musavat first adopted this name. Before this, the area was called Arran or Shirvan. This caused Iran to protest the new name.
Human history in this territory began in the late Stone Age. The Guruchay culture of Azykh Cave provides early evidence of settlement.

New groups changed the culture of the region over time. In the 11th century, Oghuz Turks migrated from Central Asia. They became known as the Turkmen in the west. The Seljuk Empire entered the area by 1067. These Turkic migrations changed the local languages. An Iranian language called Old Azeri was gradually replaced by Turkic languages. This led to the early precursor of the modern Azerbaijani language. Under the Seljuks, the region saw a blossoming of Persian literature. Famous poets like Nizami Ganjavi lived during this era. Later, the Safavid dynasty established control over the region. They converted the population to Shia Islam.
Modern political shifts occurred during the 19th and 20th centuries. Russia and Iran fought several wars over this territory. The Russo-Persian wars of 1804–1813 and 1826–1828 were very important. The treaties of Gulistan and Turkmenchay defined the new borders. Russia took control of the lands north of the Aras river. After the Russian Empire collapsed, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic formed in 1918. It was the first secular democratic Muslim-majority state.
Recent history has involved significant conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. In 1991, an ethnic Armenian majority formed the Republic of Artsakh. This region was internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan. The First Nagorno-Karabakh War ended in 1994 with Artsakh becoming de facto independent. Following the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, Azerbaijan regained control of seven districts. Parts of Nagorno-Karabakh were also returned to Azerbaijani control. In 2023, an Azerbaijani offensive ended the Republic of Artsakh. This resulted in the expulsion of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians. The country is now a unitary semi-presidential republic.
Azerbaijan is an active member of the global community. It is one of six independent Turkic states. The nation is a member of the Organization of Turkic States. It holds diplomatic relations with 182 different countries. Azerbaijan is a member of 38 international organizations. These include the United Nations and the Council of Europe. It is also a founding member of GUAM and the OPCW. The country ranks 81st on the Human Development Index. Most of the population, about 97%, is Muslim. However, the Constitution does not declare an official religion. The government remains secular. The New Azerbaijan Party has been in power since 1993.
