Jain texts also say five tirthankaras were born in this city. These leaders are named Rishabhanatha, Ajitanatha, Abhinandananatha, Sumatinatha, and Anantanatha. For Hindus, the city is very special because of the Ramayana. The epic says Ayodhya is the birthplace of the deity Rama. It is one of the seven most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus.

There was a long disagreement about a piece of land in the city. This land held the Babri mosque, which was built between 1528 and 1529. Some believed a Hindu temple stood there at the birth spot of Rama. In 1992, a mob destroyed the mosque, which caused riots across India. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India gave a final decision. They said the land belongs to the government. They ordered the land to go to a trust to build the Ram Mandir.

The name "Ayodhya" has deep roots in the Sanskrit language. It is a derivation of the verb *yudh*, which means to fight or wage war. In this context, the name translates to "not to be fought." This implies the city is invincible or unconquerable. Some interpretations suggest it means a place that cannot be conquered by sins. The city was also historically known by several other names. It was called Saketa, Kosala, or Oudh.

Historical records show that the city has changed names over many centuries. In ancient times, the settlement was widely known as Saketa. The name Saketa may come from Sanskrit words meaning "with houses" or "with banners." During the Gupta period, the city was renamed to Ayodhya. Some historians believe a Gupta emperor moved his capital to Saketa and renamed it. This would link the historical city of Saketa to the legendary city of Ayodhya.

Ayodhya holds immense importance in several major religions. In Hinduism, the city is the setting of the epic Ramayana. It is identified as the birthplace of the deity Rama of Kosala. Because of this, it is the first of seven vital pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Jainism also connects deeply to the city. Jain texts describe Ayodhya as the birthplace of five tirthankaras. These spiritual leaders are Rishabhanatha, Ajitanatha, Abhinandananatha, Sumatinatha, and Anantanatha.

Buddhist and Jain traditions also document the city's importance. Early texts mention that Gautama Buddha and Mahavira visited and lived in the city. The city likely grew as a busy marketplace. It sat at the junction of two major ancient roads. One road ran north-south between Shravasti and Pratishthana. The other road ran east-west from Rajagriha to Taxila. This location helped the city become a central hub for travelers and preachers.

Archaeological evidence provides clues about the city's ancient structure. Excavations have revealed a large brick fortification wall. Archaeologist B. B. Lal identified this as a wall built in the late third century BC. The city has seen many different rulers throughout its history. These include the Maurya, Shunga, and Kushan empires. Coins from the Deva dynasty, such as those of Muladeva, have also been found there.

In more recent history, the city was the center of a major legal dispute. This dispute involved the Babri mosque, which was built between 1528 and 1529. Many believed a Hindu temple once stood on that same site. In 1992, the mosque was demolished by a mob, leading to riots across the country. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India issued a final verdict. The court ruled the land belonged to the government. It ordered the land be given to a trust to build the Ram Mandir.

The legal resolution included specific instructions for the land. The Ram Mandir was consecrated in January 2024. To ensure fairness, the court also ordered the government to provide an alternate site. This site is a five-acre tract of land. It was given to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board to build a mosque. Today, Ayodhya continues to grow as a major global destination. New infrastructure, like the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, supports its many visitors.
