Auriga is a big part of the sky. It has many bright clusters of stars. These are groups of stars that look like clouds.

Many stars in Auriga work in interesting ways. The brightest star is called Capella. It is not just one star, but an unusual system of four stars. Capella is one of the brightest stars you can see in the night sky. Another star, Epsilon Aurigae, is an eclipsing binary. This means two stars orbit each other and block each other's light. 


People have looked at these stars for a very long time. In ancient Mesopotamia, the stars were called GAM. This name meant a scimitar or a shepherd's crook. Later, the astronomer Ptolemy listed Auriga among 48 constellations in the 2nd century. 
Mythology gives us many different heroes for this constellation. One story says the stars represent Erichthonius, a hero from Athens. He invented the quadriga, which is a chariot pulled by four horses. Zeus put him in the sky to honor his great deeds. 
Different cultures around the world saw different things in these stars. In China, the stars were part of the chariots for celestial emperors. The Bororo people in Brazil saw the stars as part of a giant caiman. 

Auriga is a prominent constellation located in the northern celestial hemisphere. 
This constellation covers a vast area of 657 square degrees. This makes it roughly half the size of Hydra, which is the largest constellation in the sky. Auriga is most visible during winter evenings in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a key part of the Winter Hexagon, an asterism that includes five other constellations. The constellation's position near the winter Milky Way makes it a rich area for deep-sky observation. 
The stars within Auriga exhibit fascinating physical properties. Its brightest star, Capella, is an unusual multiple star system.

Additionally, Auriga serves as the radiant point for several meteor showers. These include the Aurigids, Zeta Aurigids, Delta Aurigids, and the hypothesized Iota Aurigids. 
The history of Auriga involves many different interpretations across time. The first records of these stars appear in Mesopotamia, where they were called GAM. This name represented a scimitar or a shepherd's crook. Later, the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy included Auriga in his list of 48 constellations. In the Greek tradition, the stars were often linked to goats. The star Capella was associated with the she-goat Amalthea. This led to the creation of an asterism called the Haedi, or "the Kids," which includes the stars Zeta and Eta Aurigae.

The Pawnee of North America recognized a pattern of major stars nearly identical to the modern Auriga. Today, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognizes the constellation. In 1922, the IAU assigned it the three-letter abbreviation "Aur." The official boundaries were later defined in 1930 by the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte.
