Early users started transactions by inserting paper cheques marked with carbon-14. In the United States, Donald Wetzel pioneered the networked ATM through his company, Docutel. By 1974, Docutel held 70 percent of the U.S. market. These inventions changed how the whole world handles money every day.

Today, there are close to 3.5 million ATMs installed all over the world.

These machines are vital because they allow banking at any time. This happens without the need for direct interaction with bank staff. In the United States, they are commonly called ATMs. In Canada, the term automated banking machine, or ABM, is also used. In British English, people may call them cashpoints or cash machines. Some ATMs are not operated by a bank and are called "white-label" ATMs.

Using an ATM involves a specific sequence of technological steps. First, the customer must be identified by the machine. This is usually done by inserting a plastic ATM card or another acceptable payment card.

Next, the user must complete an authentication process. This is done by entering a personal identification number, known as a PIN. The machine checks this PIN against a database at the financial institution or a chip on the card. Once the identity is verified, the machine can process the request. If a user withdraws money in a foreign country, the machine handles currency conversion. The money is converted using the financial institution's specific exchange rate.

There are many different types of ATM setups and locations. Some are smaller indoor machines located in convenience stores or busy areas.

However, it could not dispense cash to users. In 1962, Adrian Ashfield invented a card system to identify users securely. This was a major step toward modern security. He worked for a company called Docutel. In 1969, Chemical Bank installed a prototype ATM in New York. This machine was initially called a "Docuteller." At first, bank executives were worried about the high costs. They also worried that customers would not trust machines with money. However, a marketing test with four machines proved they were reliable. Customers even paid a fee to use them. By 1974, Docutel controlled 70 percent of the U.S. market. This proved that networked banking was the future.

Security technology has been a major part of ATM development. In 1965, engineers at Smiths Group developed the idea of a PIN stored on a card. James Goodfellow is credited with this important patent. This allowed the machine to verify a customer without a human being present.

This system encrypted PIN and ATM messages. It used encryption to make sure telephone links were secure. This protected the data as it was sent to remote locations for verification. These security layers are what allow people to trust machines with their money.

Today, the ATM industry is a massive global system. The ATM Industry Association reports there are close to 3.5 million ATMs installed worldwide.
