The weather in Asmara is cool and pleasant. This is because the city is so high up. The air is often mild rather than hot. Most of the rain falls during the months of July and August. These two months bring about 60 percent of the yearly rain. The long dry season lasts from September until April.

Sometimes the area faces droughts when it does not rain for a long time. This can make the soil dry and hard to farm. Because of this, people must be careful with the land and the trees.

Local stories tell us how the city first began. Long ago, four different groups lived on the Kebessa Plateau. These groups often fought with each other. To find peace, the women of the clans decided they should live together. The men agreed to this plan. This helped create the name "Arbate Asmera." In the Tigrinya language, this means "the four made them unite."

Asmara faces several environmental challenges due to its climate. The region experiences periodic droughts. These droughts have occurred regularly since the 1960s. When temperatures rise and rainfall decreases, evaporation increases. This process can lead to desertification, where soil becomes desert-like. To find moist soil for farming, populations sometimes use deforestation. This removal of trees contributes to further environmental issues. Other serious concerns include soil erosion and overgrazing. Together, these factors lead to significant soil degradation.

Local oral traditions describe a unique beginning for the city. Long ago, four clans lived on the Kebessa Plateau. These clans were the Gheza Gurtom, Gheza Shelele, Gheza Serenser, and Gheza Asmae. These groups often faced attacks from lowland clans. To establish peace, the women of the four clans decided to unite. The men accepted this proposal. This union gave the city its name, Arbate Asmera. In the Tigrinya language, this means "the four made them unite." The city was a major settlement for over 500 years. It was an important stop on the trade route to Massawa.
