These places were active centers for sea trade a long time ago. The history of this area spans about 3,700 years. In the past, it was one of the five main cities of the Philistines. The city has changed many times under different rulers, like the Romans and the Byzantines.

The history of this area spans approximately 3,700 years. Ancient Ashdod developed as a major maritime trade center. There were two main sites for this activity. One was located at Ashdod-Yam. The other was at Tel Mor. In biblical times, Ashdod was one of the five principal cities of the Philistines.
The modern city of Ashdod was established in 1956. It was built on sand hills near the ancient site. The ancient town of Isdud had been depopulated during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. On May 1, 1956, Levi Eshkol approved the plan to create the new city. A company called "Ashdod Company Ltd." was formed to manage the development. The first residents were 22 families from Morocco. They arrived in November 1956. Shortly after, immigrants from Egypt also arrived to help build the community.
Industrial growth helped the city expand rapidly. An industrialist named Israel Rogosin made a large investment in the area. He opened his main Israeli factory there on August 9, 1960. Rogosin also funded the construction of three high schools. The city's main boulevard is named in his honor. Another major milestone was the construction of the port. Work on the port began in April 1961. It was inaugurated in November 1963. The first ship, the Swedish ship "Wiengelgad," used the port in November 1965. This infrastructure allowed the city to grow through many new residential quarters.
Ashdod is known for its diverse and growing population. The city has absorbed massive waves of immigration from around the world. In the 1960s, many people arrived from Romania. In the 1970s, a large number of immigrants came from Georgia. The 1990s saw even more growth. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, more than 60,000 Russians settled in Ashdod.
The city's culture is deeply connected to its many communities. Over 95% of the population is Jewish. Ashdod is home to the largest Moroccan and Karaite Jewish communities in Israel. It also hosts the largest Georgian Jewish community in the world. There are many different synagogues serving various Jewish groups. The city also has a Scandinavian Seamen Protestant church. These diverse groups live together in many different neighborhoods. The city's planning divided it into seventeen distinct quarters.
Modern Ashdod provides many essential services to its residents. The Assuta Ashdod Medical Center is the city's only general hospital.
