These are single-celled organisms like baker's yeast that reproduce by budding. The third group is the Taphrinomycotina. This is a diverse group that includes hyphal fungi and the mammalian lung parasite *Pneumocystis*.
Historically, scientists used different names based on what the fungi looked like. They used terms like Discomycetes for fungi with certain shapes. They also used names like Pyrenomycetes and Plectomycetes. Some asexual fungi were even placed in a separate group called Deuteromycota. However, modern DNA testing has changed this. We now group those fungi into Ascomycota if they are closely related to ascus-bearing species. This shows that physical appearance can sometimes be misleading compared to genetic data.
