Ascension Island

Ascension Island is a far place in the ocean.

It sits between Africa and South America. The land is dry and made of dark rock.

Long ago, the land was very bare. It had no trees at all. People brought plants from far away.

Now, a big mountain is green. It is called Green Mountain.

Trees grow there and catch the rain.

Many birds live on the island too. Some birds make loud noises all day.

People use the island to watch the sky. They use tools to track stars and space. It is a very helpful place.

People have been visiting this island for hundreds of years. A Portuguese sailor named João da Nova may have found it in 1501.

Later, Afonso de Albuquerque named it Ascension in 1503. For a long time, it was a place where sailors stopped to find meat. They hunted seabirds and large green turtles on the sandy beaches. The British began an organized settlement there in 1815.

They used the island to help ships and to watch the seas.

In the past, the island was very important for sea travel and war. During World War II, the United States built an airbase called "Wideawake."

This helped planes watch for submarines in the ocean. The island has also been a place for looking at the stars. In 1877, David Gill and his wife Isobel stayed there to study Mars.

They even had to move 20 tons of equipment to a beach called Mars Bay to get a better view.

Today, Ascension Island is a vital hub for modern technology. It is home to a Royal Air Force station and a space tracking station.

One of its most important jobs is helping the GPS system work. It is one of only four places on Earth that helps with GPS navigation. NASA also uses the island to track orbital debris in space.

This tracking helps keep astronauts and spacecraft safe from floating junk.

Mariners would hunt seabirds or enormous female green turtles on the sandy beaches. To provide more food, the Portuguese introduced goats to the island. This made the island a useful, if lonely, stop for sailors.

In 1815, the British began an organized settlement on the island. They garrisoned the island as a precaution after Napoleon was imprisoned on Saint Helena. The Royal Navy used the location as a victualling station. This means they used it to supply ships with food and water. The island was especially important for the West Africa Squadron. This group of ships worked to stop the slave trade. The island also served as a strategic point for communications. In 1899, the Eastern Telegraph Company installed a submarine cable to connect the UK with South Africa.

The environment of Ascension Island has changed significantly over time. In 1836, Charles Darwin visited the island. He described it as an arid, treeless cinder.

He noted that almost nothing grew near the coast. However, he saw that people worked hard to manage water in the interior. Following advice from Darwin and botanist Joseph Hooker, a massive planting project began in 1850. Ships brought plants from Europe, Africa, and Argentina. This effort turned the high points into a lush tropical cloud forest.

This area is now known as Green Mountain.

Astronomy has also played a major role on the island. In 1877, Sir David Gill and his wife Isobel used the island to study Mars. They used a special telescope called a heliometer. This device uses a split image to measure the distance between celestial bodies. Because the island is near the equator, they could see a large part of the sky. They had to move 20 tons of heavy equipment across lava fields.

They eventually set up camp at Mars Bay to find clearer skies. Their successful measurements of solar parallax helped advance planetary science.

During World War II, the island became a critical military site. The United States built an airbase known as "Wideawake" to support the Battle of the Atlantic.

This base allowed aircraft to perform antisubmarine warfare patrols. These patrols helped protect ships from enemy submarines. The island was also used as a staging point during the Falklands War. This history of military use helped establish the island as a permanent station for air and sea operations.

Today, Ascension Island is essential for modern technology and space exploration. It hosts a Royal Air Force station and a European Space Agency rocket tracking station. It is also home to a BBC World Service Atlantic Relay Station. One of its most important roles is supporting the Global Positioning System, or GPS. Ascension is one of only four ground antennas in the world that assists the GPS system.

Additionally, NASA operates the John Africano NASA/AFRL Orbital Debris Observatory. This facility uses a Meter Class Autonomous Telescope to track orbital debris. Tracking this space junk is necessary to keep astronauts and spacecraft safe.
