On October 31, 2019, UNESCO named it a "Design City" through its Creative Cities Network. This recognition highlights the city's cultural and creative importance. As a central hub in northern Hokkaido, it remains influential in both industry and commerce.

The geography of Asahikawa is defined by water and mountains. The city contains approximately 130 rivers and streams. Two major waterways are the Ishikari River and the Chūbetsu River.
