Arnhem Land is a vast and historically significant region in the Northern Territory of Australia. It occupies the north-eastern corner of the territory, situated near the capital city of Darwin.

The human history of Arnhem Land is incredibly deep. Evidence shows that humans have inhabited this region for approximately 60,000 years.
Long before European explorers arrived, Arnhem Land engaged in international trade. Since at least the 18th century, Muslim traders from Makassar in Sulawesi visited the coast.
The colonial period brought significant changes and hardships to the region. In 1884, the British government sold 10,000 square miles to a cattle grazier named John Arthur Macartney. He named the property Florida Station and brought cattle from Queensland. However, the station was abandoned in 1893 due to disease, flooding, and resistance from Aboriginal groups. Later, between 1903 and 1908, the Eastern and African Cold Storage Supply Company managed much of the land. This company attempted to build a massive meat production industry called Arafura cattle station. During this time, many violent conflicts occurred between armed men and the resident Aboriginal population. These difficult chapters are remembered by groups like the Yolngu people.
In the mid-20th century, the struggle for land rights became a major focus. In 1963, the Yirrkala bark petitions were presented to the federal parliament. This happened after bauxite mining exploration began near the Yirrkala mission without local consultation. This led to the Gove land rights case, known as Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd, in 1971. It was the first significant legal case for Aboriginal land rights in Australia. The legal battles regarding native title have continued to shape the region's governance. In 2025, a High Court ruling upheld that parties are entitled to significant compensation.
Today, the population of Arnhem Land is mostly Aboriginal, with many living on small outstations or homelands.
Arnhem Land is also becoming a site for modern global technology. In 2019, NASA selected the region for a new space launch facility.
Cultural expression remains a vital part of life in the region.
