Arjuna's birth involved a specific custom known as niyoga. This practice allowed a man to father a child on behalf of another. King Pandu was of the royal Kuru dynasty and the Lunar dynasty. However, a curse rendered him unable to engage in sexual relations. To provide heirs, Kunti used a sacred mantra from the sage Durvasa. This mantra allowed her to invoke gods to beget children. When she summoned Indra, he assumed human form to approach her. Arjuna was born under the auspicious lunar constellation of Phalguna.
