The creation of the album was a complex process spanning five months. Recording began in late October 1966 and lasted until early April 1967. The band completed the work through 16 separate recording sessions. They utilized three different London locations for these sessions. These studios included De Lane Lea Studios, CBS Studios, and Olympic Studios. Chandler specifically chose Olympic Studios because it was acoustically superior. It also featured the latest recording technology available at the time. Although the studios used four-track recorders, American studios were already moving toward eight-track technology.

Before the album's release, Jimi Hendrix faced significant professional struggles. By May 1966, he was working on the R&B circuit as a backing guitarist. He struggled to earn a steady living during this period. His talent was eventually noticed by Linda Keith at the Cheetah Club in New York City. She recommended him to several industry professionals, though they initially rejected him. Eventually, she referred him to Chas Chandler. Chandler was a former bassist for the band the Animals. He saw Hendrix's potential and brought him to London on September 24, 1966.

To showcase Hendrix's talents, Chandler recruited members for a new band called the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He first recruited guitarist Noel Redding, who impressed Hendrix with his knowledge of blues progressions. Redding agreed to play bass guitar for the group. Chandler then sought a drummer and found Mitch Mitchell through a mutual friend. Mitchell and Hendrix bonded over their shared interest in rhythm and blues. After being rejected by Decca Records, the group signed with Track, a new label. This label was formed by Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, who were managers for the band the Who.

The recording process involved specific methods to manage costs and sound quality. To save money, Hendrix and Chandler performed much of the pre-production work at their shared apartment. Chandler also intentionally limited the creative input of Mitchell and Redding. He wanted to ensure that the music remained focused on Hendrix's vision. During sessions at CBS Studios, engineer Mike Ross used a Neumann condenser microphone. Hendrix requested the microphone be placed twelve feet away to capture a powerful sound. This technique was vital to creating the unique sound of the Experience. The band often recorded live instrument tracks as a foundation for their songs.

There were notable differences between the British and American versions of the album. The UK version was released on May 12, 1967, and peaked at number two on the British charts. It remained on those charts for 33 weeks. The US version was issued on August 23 by Reprise Records. It reached number five on the US Billboard Top LPs chart. The US release stayed on the charts for 106 weeks, with 76 of those weeks in the Top 40. This version included famous singles like "Purple Haze," "Hey Joe," and "The Wind Cries Mary." These songs were top ten hits in the UK but were omitted from the original British LP. Hendrix also worked with photographer Karl Ferris to create a more "psychedelic" cover for the US release.

The album's significance has been recognized by many major institutions over the decades. In 2005, the Library of Congress added the album to the National Recording Registry. They chose it for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. Rolling Stone magazine ranked the album 30th on its 2020 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." Additionally, several songs from the US version appeared on their list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time." These included "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe," and "The Wind Cries Mary." Archivist Reuben Jackson noted that the album altered the musical syntax of rock, R&B, and blues.
