There are about 600 different species in this group. They belong to two main families called Machilidae and Meinertellidae. Most species live in moist soil, but some live in sandy deserts or near rocky shores. They eat things like algae, moss, and lichens. Because their skin is thin, they must stay in damp places like under bark or stones. They use special parts on their bellies to absorb water. Many specialized parts help these insects survive in their environments. They possess large compound eyes that meet at the top of the head. They also have three ocelli, which are simple eyes. Their mouthparts include simple chewing mandibles that can be partly retracted. Interestingly, they lack olfactory receptor-coreceptors, known as Orco. This means they do not have the same scent-sensing mechanisms as many other insects.

Their bodies are also covered in scales that detach easily. These scales protect the exoskeleton from abrasion and make them hard to grip. Because their exoskeleton is thin, they must live in moist areas like under bark or stones to avoid dehydration.

Archaeognatha belong to two main families: Machilidae and Meinertellidae. There are roughly 600 species within the order. The Machilidae family is unique because some species have small, muscleless appendages called styli on their second and third thoracic legs. In contrast, the Meinertellidae family lacks these specific leg styli.

To stay hydrated, they use eversible membranous vesicles on their underside. These vesicles absorb water and assist the insect during the molting process.

The classification of these insects has changed due to scientific discovery. For a long time, Archaeognatha and Zygentoma were grouped together in the order Thysanura. This was because both groups possess the three-pronged tail structure. However, researchers in the late 20th century discovered that Thysanura was paraphyletic. This means the group did not include all the descendants of a common ancestor. As a result, Archaeognatha was raised to its own independent monophyletic order. It is now recognized as a sister taxon to the Dicondylia.

Reproduction in bristletails involves several different behaviors. In some species, the male spins a silk carrier thread on the ground. He places droplets of sperm on this thread for the female to collect. In other species, the male deposits a sperm packet, or spermatophore, on a short stalk. The genus Petrobius uses a more direct method. In this case, the male places a sperm droplet directly on the female's ovipositor.

One hypothesis suggests that insect genitals may have originally evolved from water-uptake structures.

Life cycles for Archaeognatha are quite long compared to other small insects. A female may lay a batch of approximately 30 eggs in a crevice. The young look like the adults once they hatch. It can take up to two years for them to reach sexual maturity. This duration depends on the temperature and the amount of available food. Unlike most insects, adults continue to molt throughout their lives. They can live for a total lifespan of up to four years.
