First, the heat can protect plant tissues from damage in cold regions. Second, the heat helps to volatilize or spread scents to attract pollinators. For example, species like the titan arum (*Amorphophallus titanum*) and the dead-horse arum lily (*Helicodiceros muscivorus*) produce a pungent smell similar to rotten meat. Additionally, the ripened fruit of *Monstera deliciosa* is edible. Many people rely on the corm, a starchy underground stem, for subsistence agriculture. Common food plants include the elephant-foot yam (*Amorphophallus paeoniifolius*) and taro (*Colocasia esculenta*).
