People have used this sea for trade for a long time. Ships carry goods between many lands. Big ports like Mumbai and Karachi help with this.

The sea also has a special zone. It is an oxygen minimum zone, or OMZ. This is a place with very little oxygen. This happens because of high heat and nutrients. In winter, tiny plants called phytoplankton turn the water bright green.

The sea is also very deep in many places. Its deepest point reaches 5,395 meters down. This is a very long way below the waves.

Water moves through the sea in interesting ways. The Gulf of Aden connects it to the Red Sea. This happens through a narrow path called the Bab-el-Mandeb strait.

Another branch is the Gulf of Oman. This part connects the sea to the Persian Gulf. The Indus River is the biggest river that flows into it. Large underwater shapes like the Indus Fan also exist here. This fan is the second largest in the whole world.

People have used this sea for trade for a very long time. Ships have crossed these waters since the 3rd or 2nd millennium BCE. In the past, sailors used coastal vessels to move goods. It covers a total surface area of approximately 3,862,000 square kilometers. This sea is bounded by several different landmasses and countries. To the west lies the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf of Aden. To the northwest, it meets the Gulf of Oman and Iran. The north is bordered by Pakistan, while India sits to the east. In the southeast, the Laccadive Sea and the Maldives form the boundary. The southwest coastline is shaped by Somalia. This vast body of water is vital for global geography and ocean systems.

Water flows through the Arabian Sea via several important branches. The Gulf of Aden in the southwest connects the sea to the Red Sea. This connection happens through a narrow passage called the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. In the northwest, the Gulf of Oman provides a link to the Persian Gulf. The sea also contains the gulfs of Khambhat and Kutch along the Indian coast. One of the most significant freshwater inputs is the Indus River. This river is the largest one flowing into the Arabian Sea. These connections allow for the movement of water between different parts of the Indian Ocean.

Beneath the waves, the sea contains complex and deep geological features. The Alula-Fartak Trough is located on the western edge off the Gulf of Aden. This trough reaches depths of over 5,360 meters. The deepest known point in the entire sea is 5,395 meters deep. In the north, the Indus Fan is a massive structure. It is actually the second largest fan system in the entire world. Another feature is the De Covilhao Trough, named after the 15th-century explorer Pero de Covilhăo. This trough reaches 4,400 meters deep and separates the Indus Fan from the Oman Abyssal Plain. The southern part of the sea is dominated by the Arabian Basin, which reaches depths over 4,200 meters.

History shows that this sea has been a center for trade for millennia. Marine trade routes have been used here since the 3rd or 2nd millennium BCE. During the Age of Sail, coastal vessels moved goods across these waters. By the era of Julius Caesar, land and sea routes were well-established. These routes helped traders avoid the rough, inhospitable terrain of the northern lands. Travelers often had to move goods from ships to animal caravans. They then traveled through deserts, facing risks from bandits and local tolls. Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs even built shallow canals to help service this maritime trade.

Today, the Arabian Sea remains essential for global commerce through many major ports. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai is the largest port in the region. It is also the largest container port in India. In Pakistan, the Port of Karachi is the largest and busiest seaport. Another important site is the Gwadar Port, located on a hammerhead-shaped peninsula. In Oman, the Port of Salalah is a major hub that is used by many nations. These ports allow huge amounts of cargo to move between continents. They connect the sea to the economies of India, Pakistan, Iran, and Oman.

Several unique islands are scattered throughout the Arabian Sea.

Socotra is the largest island and is part of an archipelago of four islands. The Lakshadweep Islands are located off the southwestern coast of India. These islands form part of the Lakshadweep-Maldives-Chagos group. Another notable island is Astola Island, also called the 'Island of the Seven Hills.' Interestingly, the sea can create new land through geological shifts. In 2013, an earthquake in Pakistan created a mud island called Zalzala Koh. However, this island was temporary and submerged completely by 2016.

Scientists study the Arabian Sea to monitor changing environmental conditions. One major area of study is the Oxygen Minimum Zone, or OMZ. This is a region where oxygen levels are extremely low. The Arabian Sea has one of the three largest OMZs in the world. High temperatures and nutrients can contribute to these low oxygen levels. In the winter, tiny organisms called phytoplankton can turn this zone bright green.

Additionally, researchers from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology have studied warming trends. They found the sea is warming, which may be linked to global warming. Changes in the summer monsoon jet may also increase heat in the upper ocean.
