Long ago, two powerful groups fought for control.
The fighting happened in the Caucasus region. This area has many big mountains. The Arabs wanted to control the land. They also wanted to control the city of Derbent. This city was very important for travel.
The wars happened in two main parts. The first part started around the year 642. The second part was much larger. It happened between the years 722 and 737. During these years, the two sides fought many battles. The Khazars even won a big battle at Ardabil in 730.
Eventually, the large wars ended. The two groups stopped fighting so much. Instead, they began to trade with each other.
The Arab–Khazar wars were a long series of fights between two large powers.
The wars happened because both sides wanted to control certain lands. The Arabs wanted to secure the South Caucasus. They also wanted to control the North Caucasus. The Khazars were already living in the north.
Historians divide these wars into two main periods. The first period began around 642. It ended about ten years later in 652. During this time, Arab forces fought at the town of Balanjar.
Many leaders and soldiers took part in the fighting. In the year 730, the Khazars won a big battle at Ardabil. This battle was very important. During this fight, the Arab general al-Jarrah ibn Abdallah was killed.
After the big wars ended, things changed for the people living there. The two sides stopped fighting as much. Instead, they began to trade with each other. The Caucasus became a way for people to trade. It linked the Middle East to Eastern Europe. This helped different cultures connect. Even though small fights happened later, the era of huge wars was over. The region became a path for goods and ideas to move.
The Arab–Khazar wars were a series of long military conflicts in the Caucasus region. These wars took place between the Khazar Khaganate and several successive Arab caliphates. The fighting lasted from approximately 642 CE until 799 CE. This region sits between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It contains tall mountains that act as a natural barrier. Controlling the mountain passes was a major goal for both empires.
The conflict was driven by the need to control strategic mountain routes. Two main paths exist through the Caucasus mountains. One is the Darial Pass in the center. The other is the Pass of Derbent along the Caspian Sea. The city of Derbent was especially important for defense. It served as a gateway between the north and the south.
Historians divide these conflicts into two primary periods of major warfare. The First Arab–Khazar War occurred between roughly 642 and 652 CE. It began when Arab forces captured the strategic city of Derbent. This first period ended after a large Arab force was defeated near Balanjar.
The Arab armies used specific military tactics to fight the Khazars. They relied heavily on infantry, which are soldiers who fight on foot. These troops were often very disciplined and professional. To stop Khazar cavalry charges, Arab soldiers would dig trenches. They also formed walls using long spears.
The Khazars used different strategies suited to their nomadic lifestyle. They often launched raids that reached deep into the South Caucasus. These raids were not always intended to conquer new lands permanently. Instead, they were often used to strike at their enemies.
Specific leaders shaped the course of these many years of war. In the second period, generals like al-Jarrah ibn Abdallah and Maslama ibn Abd al-Malik led Arab forces. Maslama recaptured Derbent, which became a major Arab military outpost.
The wars had a massive impact on the politics of the Middle East. The constant fighting weakened the Umayyad dynasty. This instability contributed to the Abbasid Revolution in 750 CE. The revolution led to the creation of the Abbasid Caliphate.
