Chinese astronomy viewed the stars through a very different lens. The stream of water was seen as the "Army of Yu-Lin," meaning "feathers and forests." This group represented light-footed soldiers from the northern empire. This was the most numerous Chinese constellation, containing 45 stars. Other parts of the constellation included the "Water Jar" asterism, known as the tomb Fenmu. Some stars also formed the ramparts of a castle called Leibizhen. The stars were organized into various lunar mansions, such as Nu, Xu, and Wei.
While the constellation is large, it does not have many very bright stars. The brightest star is Beta Aquarii, which has an apparent magnitude of 2.9. Its proper name is Sadalsuud. This is a luminous yellow supergiant star. It is approximately 50 times the diameter of our Sun. It is also about 2,200 times as luminous as the Sun and 6.4 times as massive. The second brightest star is Alpha Aquarii, also called Sadalmelik. It is a yellow supergiant that is 3,000 times as luminous as the Sun. These two stars are moving through space perpendicular to the plane of the Milky Way.
Researchers use different methods to find these distant worlds. The transit method involves watching for a star to dim as a planet passes in front of it. This method helped discover the planet WASP-6 b. The radial velocity method looks for the tiny wobbles a planet causes in its star. This method was used to find the planet HD 210277 b in 1998. Studying these systems helps scientists understand how different types of stars and planets work together. Aquarius remains a vital area for studying the diversity of the universe.
