For the actual landing, astronauts used a separate Lunar Module (LM). During a mission, one astronaut would remain in lunar orbit within the CSM. The other two would descend to the surface in the LM. This modular design allowed for a controlled descent and a safe return journey.

Apollo's journey involved several distinct stages of development and mission types. It grew out of Project Mercury, which only supported one astronaut. It was followed by Project Gemini, which tested advanced spaceflight technology. The program itself ran from 1961 to 1972. The first crewed flight did not occur until 1968. Once the Moon landing goal was set, NASA focused on creating a specific spacecraft design. They eventually chose a design by North American Aviation for the command module. This specific hardware allowed for the complex maneuvers required for deep space travel.

The program's direction changed due to intense political pressure and competition. In 1960, the program was conceived during the Eisenhower administration. However, President John F. Kennedy turned it into a national mission in May 1961.
