Some are called antshrikes, antwrens, antvireos, fire-eyes, bare-eyes, or bushbirds. While these names suggest a relationship to other birds, antbirds are not closely related to true wrens, vireos, or shrikes. Instead, they are part of the infraorder Tyrannides, which are known as tracheophone suboscines.

Antbirds have specific physical traits that help them survive in dense forests. Most species are relatively small, but they vary in size. The giant antshrike can reach 45 cm in length and weigh 150 g. In contrast, the pygmy antwren is tiny, measuring only 8 cm and weighing just 7 g.

This larger group also included antthrushes and antpittas. However, researchers discovered significant differences in the structure of the birds' breastbone, or sternum. They also noted differences in the syrinx, which is the avian voicebox.

Further studies using DNA–DNA hybridization by Sibley and Ahlquist in 1990 helped clarify these relationships. Modern science now uses DNA sequencing of specific genes to confirm these lineages. This work has helped identify two major clades: one containing larger, strong-billed antshrikes and another containing smaller, slender-billed antwrens.
