Andromeda is a group of stars.

Andromeda is a large group of stars.

Andromeda is a very large group of stars.

There are many bright stars in this group. Alpheratz is the brightest star. It is a binary star, which means it is two stars together. Another star is called Almach. It is a colorful star that people like to study. Mirach is a big red star. You can see its red color with just your eyes.
You can also find a giant galaxy here. It is called the Andromeda Galaxy. It is a spiral galaxy. It is the closest one to our own Milky Way. It is very bright in the sky. You can even see a blue object called the Blue Snowball Nebula with a telescope.
Andromeda is a huge group of stars in the night sky.

Many stars make up this pattern in the sky. The brightest star is Alpheratz, which is a binary star. A binary star is actually two stars orbiting each other. Alpheratz is 97 light-years away from Earth. Another star is called Almach, which is a colorful bright giant.
Long ago, people used myths to explain these stars. The name comes from a Greek story about a princess. In the myth, Andromeda was the daughter of Queen Cassiopeia. She was chained to a rock to face a sea monster named Cetus. A hero named Perseus eventually saved her from the monster. After she died, the goddess Athena placed her in the sky. This was done to honor her memory. Other cultures had different stories for these same stars.
Ancient astronomers studied Andromeda for a very long time. Ptolemy listed it as one of his 48 original constellations. In Chinese astronomy, these stars were part of four different groups. One group was called Kui, which meant "Legs." In the 1700s, an astronomer named Johann Bode made a new pattern. He called it Honores Friderici to honor a King of Prussia. However, people soon stopped using that name. The International Astronomical Union now officially recognizes Andromeda.
Andromeda holds some of the most amazing objects in space. The most famous is the Andromeda Galaxy, also called M31.

Andromeda is a massive constellation located in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by astronomers today. The constellation covers an area of 722 square degrees. This makes it one of the largest patterns in the sky. To understand its scale, it is over 1,400 times the size of the full moon. It is also 55% the size of Hydra, the largest constellation.

The stars within Andromeda form a complex pattern. The brightest star is Alpheratz, or Alpha Andromedae. It is a binary star, which means it consists of two stars orbiting one another. Alpheratz is located 97 light-years from Earth. It is also part of the Great Square of Pegasus. Another important star is Mirach, or Beta Andromedae. Mirach is a red giant star located 198 light-years away. It is part of an asterism called the "girdle."
Andromeda contains many famous deep-sky objects. The most famous is the Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31. It is a spiral galaxy and the closest one to our Milky Way. It is also one of the brightest Messier objects. You can actually see it with the naked eye.

The name of the constellation comes from Greek mythology. Andromeda was the daughter of Queen Cassiopeia. In the myth, she was chained to a rock to be eaten by a sea monster named Cetus. Her father, Cepheus, was told she must be sacrificed to save his kingdom. The hero Perseus eventually arrived and saved her. In one version, he used the head of Medusa to turn the monster to stone. In another version, he slew the monster with a diamond sword. After her death, the goddess Athena placed her in the sky to honor her.
Different cultures have seen different things in these stars. In Chinese astronomy, Andromeda was divided into four different constellations. One group was called Kui, which meant "Legs." Another part was called the "stable on sky" for changing horses. Some stars formed a group called "Heaven's Great General." In Hindu mythology, there is a similar legend about a woman named Antarmada. Scholars believe these myths might be linked because the names are so similar. In the Marshall Islands, these stars are part of a constellation representing a porpoise. In these stories, Cassiopeia represents the tail and Aries represents the head.
Astronomers have mapped Andromeda for centuries. The 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy included it in his Almagest. He defined it as one of 48 original constellations. In 1787, German astronomer Johann Bode created a temporary constellation called Honores Friderici. He designed it to honor King Frederick II of Prussia. However, this name did not last long. In 1922, the International Astronomical Union gave Andromeda the abbreviation "And." In 1930, the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte defined its official boundaries. He used a polygon made of 36 segments to mark the area.
Andromeda is also home to interesting celestial events. The constellation is the radiant for the Andromedids. This is a weak meteor shower that occurs every November. Because the constellation is so large, it is connected to many other systems. It shares stars with the constellation Pegasus and is near Lacerta. The study of Andromeda helps astronomers understand how galaxies and star systems work. By looking at its stars and galaxies, we learn more about our place in the cosmos.
