Grove's early life was marked by significant hardship in Hungary. He was born Gróf András István to a Jewish family in Budapest. When he was eight, the Nazis occupied Hungary. To stay safe, Grove and his mother used false identities. His father was arrested and sent to an Eastern Labor Camp. After the 1956 Hungarian revolution, Grove escaped to Austria at age 20. He moved to the United States in 1957 with very little money. He eventually anglicized his name to Andrew S. Grove. Despite these struggles, he maintained a strong passion for learning.

His academic journey led him to become a highly trained engineer. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the City College of New York in 1960.

Later, he earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1963. Before joining Intel, he worked as a researcher at Fairchild Semiconductor. There, he became familiar with integrated circuits. These circuits are essential components for the microcomputer revolution. He even wrote a college textbook on semiconductor device physics in 1967.

Grove joined Intel in 1968, the same year Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore co-founded it. He was the company's third employee and served as the director of engineering. Initially, Intel focused on manufacturing static memory chips for mainframe computers. However, the company expanded into digital watches and electronic calculators. In the 1970s, Intel introduced the 4-bit 4004, the first general-purpose microprocessor. This was followed by the 8-bit 8008 and the 8080 processor. The 8080 became the core of the Altair, the first personal computer. Later, the 8088 microprocessor was chosen by IBM for its PC. This helped bring personal computers to the general public.

One of Grove's most important decisions involved a major shift in business strategy. By 1985, Intel faced challenges from Japanese companies selling memory chips at low prices. This created a situation where demand for Intel's memory chips dropped. Grove decided to stop producing DRAMs, which are types of memory chips. Instead, he chose to focus the company entirely on microprocessors. He and sales manager Earl Whetstone negotiated with IBM to use Intel chips. This move was a successful response to a strategic inflection point. A strategic inflection point is a time when a company must change its strategy to survive.

Grove's management style was unique and highly disciplined. He believed that a corporation is like a living organism that must constantly change.
