He was a key leader who sought to end Spanish colonial rule. Bonifacio helped found and lead a secret society known as the Katipunan. This movement eventually transformed into a full-scale revolutionary government.

Bonifacio was born on November 30, 1863, in Tondo, Manila. His parents were Catalina de Castro and Santiago Bonifacio. He was the eldest of six children.

While he attended some schools in Tondo, he did not complete a formal higher education. Instead, he became a dedicated self-taught reader. He studied the French Revolution and biographies of United States presidents. He also read important novels like Victor Hugo's *Les Misérables*. This reading helped him understand complex political ideas.

To support his family, Bonifacio worked several different jobs. He and his siblings sold handmade walking canes and paper fans. Later, he worked for international trading firms. He served as a messenger for a British firm and a storehouse keeper for a German firm. He also worked as a theater actor. He often played the role of Bernardo Carpio, a hero from Tagalog folklore. In 1892, he married Gregoria de Jesús, who became a leading member of the Katipunan.

Bonifacio's political path began with La Liga Filipina in 1892. This group sought peaceful political reforms from Spain. However, the organization disbanded after the arrest of José Rizal. In response, Bonifacio and others founded the Katipunan on July 7, 1892. The full name was *Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan*. This secret society used rituals influenced by Freemasonry. It aimed to achieve independence through armed revolt.

The Katipunan was a highly organized movement with a clear structure. It had its own laws, a bureaucratic system, and elected leaders. The society used a Supreme Council to coordinate with provincial and local councils. Bonifacio eventually became the third head of the group. He used the pseudonym "May pag-asa" to protect his identity. He also worked with Emilio Jacinto to publish *Kalayaan*, the society's newspaper.

The movement experienced massive growth in a very short time. In January 1896, the Katipunan had fewer than 300 members. By August 1896, membership had surged to between 30,000 and 40,000 people. This rapid expansion alerted the Spanish authorities. In August 1896, the Spanish government discovered the secret society. This led to many arrests for treason. Bonifacio responded by calling a mass gathering in Caloocan. During this event, members tore their *cédulas*, which were personal identity documents. This event is known as the "Cry of Balintawak" or the "Cry of Pugad Lawin."

As the revolution began, Bonifacio reorganized the Katipunan into a revolutionary government. He became the *Supremo*, or Supreme President, of the rebel army. He established a nation-state called *Haring Bayang Katagalugan*.

In this context, the term "Tagalog" referred to everyone born in the Philippine Islands. Because of this specific definition, some historians view him as the First President of the Tagalogs. This distinction is why he is sometimes not included in official lists of Philippine Presidents.

Bonifacio's life ended in May 1897. He was executed under orders from the *Consejo de la Guerra*, or Council of War. He was accused of sedition and treason against the government. Despite his death, his influence on Philippine history remains immense.
