One of the most complex examples is the Antikythera mechanism. Found in a Roman-era shipwreck, this device used a differential gear. This specific mechanism allowed users to determine the angle between the sun and the moon's positions to find moon phases.

Specific mechanical components allowed for precise control and movement. The Archimedes' screw, attributed to Archimedes of Syracuse in the 3rd century BC, could lift solids or liquids to higher elevations. 


Resource extraction and construction also relied on advanced technical knowledge. At the silver mines of Laurium, Greeks mined ores in underground galleries. These tunnels reached depths of 330 feet and were worked using iron hammers and picks. To move the extracted ore, workers used small skips hauled by ropes. Sometimes, a wheel was placed against the mine shaft to guide the rope. In construction, the crane was used as a labor-saving device. By the 4th century BC, Aristotle noted that winches and pulley hoists were common in architecture.

Urban planning and infrastructure were highly organized during this period. The city of Miletus was one of the first to use a grid-like plan for its streets. This required advanced surveying and mathematical skills. Transportation was also improved through specialized infrastructure. The Diolkos was a rudimentary form of railway, stretching between 6 and 8.5 km in length. For maritime travel, engineers built the ancient Suez Canal under Ptolemy II in the early 3rd century BC. They also developed lighthouses, such as the one at the harbor of Piraeus, to guide ships.
Scientific inquiry and its publication helped spread these technical advances. Many of these breakthroughs were recorded by famous philosophers and mathematicians. Archimedes of Syracuse is well known for describing the lever around 260 BC. Ctesibius of Alexandria was another vital figure who invented a primitive cannon using compressed air. He also created an odometer to measure the distance traveled by vehicles. These tools revolutionized road building and travel by allowing for accurate distance measurement. The legacy of Greek technology lies in this transition from simple tools to complex, calculated systems.
