Anawrahta was a famous king. He started the Pagan Empire in modern-day Myanmar.
Anawrahta was a smart leader. He built many weirs and canals. Weirs are walls built in rivers to move water. These helped farmers grow lots of rice. This made his land very rich.
He also helped spread a religion called Theravada Buddhism. This way of life became very important to his people. He even fought to protect it. He stopped other empires from moving into his land.
Anawrahta had great helpers. They were called the Four Great Paladins. They were brave men who served him.
Anawrahta was a very famous king from a long time ago. He is known as the founder of the Pagan Empire. This empire was located in a place we now call Myanmar.
Anawrahta was a very organized leader who made many changes. He wanted to make sure his people had enough food to eat. The land around Pagan was very dry and parched. To fix this, he built many weirs and canals. A weir is a wall built across a river to move water.
His life began with many changes in his family. He was born Min Saw on 11 May 1014. His father was King Kunhsaw Kyaunghpyu. When Min Saw was only six years old, his father lost the throne. His step-brothers, Kyiso and Sokkate, became the leaders instead. Min Saw grew up near a monastery with his mother. In 1044, he challenged Sokkate to a fight on horseback. Min Saw won the fight at a place called Myinkaba. He became the king and took the name Anawrahta.
Anawrahta had many brave men helping him rule. These men were called the Four Great Paladins. One was his son, Kyansittha, who was a lead general. Another was a man named Nyaung-U Hpi. A third was a former tree climber named Nga Lon Letpe. The last was a farmer named Nga Lon Letpe.
Anawrahta's choices changed how people lived in Southeast Asia. He embraced a religion called Theravada Buddhism. This helped the religion grow in many nearby places. He stopped the Khmer Empire from moving into his territory. This gave Buddhism a safe place to stay and grow.
Anawrahta Minsaw was the founder of the Pagan Empire in Upper Burma. He is often called the father of the Burmese nation. His rule transformed a small, dry principality into a massive empire. This empire formed the historical basis for modern-day Myanmar.
Anawrahta's rise to power involved a significant family conflict. He was born Min Saw on 11 May 1014 to King Kunhsaw Kyaunghpyu. When Min Saw was six, his father was removed from the throne. His step-brothers, Kyiso and Sokkate, took control of the court. Min Saw lived near a monastery with his mother during this time. In 1044, a dispute over his mother's status led to a rebellion. Min Saw challenged Sokkate to single combat on horseback at Myinkaba.
To support his growing empire, Anawrahta focused on massive economic reforms. He needed to solve the problem of the parched, arid land in central Burma. He constructed an advanced irrigation system to turn these regions into rice granaries. This system included repairing Meiktila Lake and building several weirs. A weir is a low dam built across a river to regulate water flow. He built four weirs on the Panlaung river and three on the Zawgyi river.
Anawrahta also built a powerful military to protect and expand his borders. He relied on a group of elite leaders called the Four Great Paladins. This group included his son and lead general, Kyansittha. Other members were Nyaung-U Hpi, a swimmer, and Nga Lon Letpe, a former farmer. He also worked with Byatta, a Muslim seaman who had been shipwrecked.
By the mid-1050s, Anawrahta began expanding the empire through strategic campaigns. He first targeted the Shan Hills in the east and north. He secured the allegiance of Shan chiefs through tribute and military presence. Following an expedition to the Dali Kingdom, he established many forts to secure these routes. In 1057, he turned his attention to the Mon-speaking kingdoms in the south. His armies besieged the city of Thaton for three months.
Anawrahta's religious choices had a massive impact on all of Southeast Asia. He embraced Theravada Buddhism, which provided a safe shelter for the faith. At the time, this school of Buddhism was retreating in other parts of South and Southeast Asia. By protecting it, he allowed the religion to eventually spread to Lan Na, Siam, and Laos. His success also prevented the Khmer Empire from encroaching on the Tenasserim coast. This helped establish Pagan as one of the two great kingdoms in the region.
The legacy of Anawrahta's administration lasted for centuries. He created a strong system that all later Pagan kings followed. This dynasty remained dominant until its fall in 1287. His work laid the foundation for the spread of the Burmese language and ethnicity. Even today, his life stories are central to Burmese folklore and theater.
