Ananda Mahidol was the eighth king of the Chakri dynasty. He was known as Rama VIII in the land of Siam. Today, people call this country Thailand.

Ananda's life changed a lot when he was a young boy. In 1935, his uncle, King Prajadhipok, decided to step down from the throne. The government and the National Assembly chose nine-year-old Ananda to be the new king. Because he was still a child, he could not rule the country alone. A group of leaders called regents were chosen to help manage things for him. Ananda moved to Switzerland to live and study while he was king.
While Ananda was away, a huge war called World War II began. In 1941, Japan invaded Thailand. This made Thailand part of an alliance with Japan. Ananda remained in Switzerland to finish his education during these difficult years. He studied law at the University of Lausanne. After the war ended in 1945, Ananda finally returned to his home in Thailand. He arrived in December 1945 with a law degree.
When he returned, the Thai people were very happy to see their king. He worked hard to be a good leader for everyone. One famous thing he did was visit Sampheng Lane in Chinatown. This visit helped people of different backgrounds get along better after the war. Some visitors noticed that the young king seemed a bit nervous or lonely. A British leader named Louis Mountbatten even thought the king looked very small and frightened in his fancy decorations.
A very sad mystery happened at the end of his reign. In June 1946, Ananda was found shot dead in his bed. He was staying at the Boromphiman Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace.

Ananda Mahidol was the eighth king of the Chakri dynasty in Siam. Today, the nation is known as Thailand. He reigned under the title Rama VIII.
Ananda's early life involved moving between many different countries. His family lived in Paris, Lausanne, and Massachusetts. In 1927, his uncle issued a royal edict. This edict raised Ananda to a higher princely rank called Phra Worawong Ther Phra Ong Chao. This change also benefited his elder sister and his younger brother. His family returned to Thailand in 1928 after his father finished medical studies at Harvard University. Tragically, Prince Mahidol died in 1929 when Ananda was only four years old. His mother, Mom Sangwan, was left to raise the children alone.
Political changes in Thailand altered the course of Ananda's life. In 1932, a revolution ended the absolute monarchy. This created uncertainty about who would next lead the country. King Prajadhipok, Ananda's uncle, faced political quarrels and health problems. He eventually decided to abdicate his throne in 1935. The National Assembly had to choose a successor. There was a debate regarding Prince Chula Chakrabongse. Some argued he was barred from succession because he married a foreigner. However, a leader named Pridi Banomyong persuaded the cabinet to follow the Succession Law. This law favored the line of Queen Saovabha. Consequently, the nine-year-old Ananda Mahidol was elected king on March 2, 1935.
Because Ananda was a child, he could not rule alone. The National Assembly appointed three regents to manage the kingdom. These regents were Colonel Prince Anuwatjaturong, Lieutenant Commander Prince Aditya Dibabha, and Chao Phraya Yommaraj. Ananda spent most of his youth studying in Switzerland. He returned to Siam for the first time as monarch in 1938. He was thirteen years old during this visit. He was accompanied by his mother and his brother, Bhumibol Adulyadej. During this era, Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram served as prime minister.
World War II brought significant upheaval to the region. In December 1941, Japan invaded Thailand. Thailand formed an alliance with Japan and joined the Axis powers. Ananda was in Switzerland during the war to finish his studies. Pridi Banomyong served as regent while the king was away. The war caused economic hardship and heavy bombing in Bangkok. In 1944, the government of Phibunsongkhram was replaced by a new administration. After Japan surrendered in August 1945, British military responsibility fell to Thailand. Ananda finally returned to his home in December 1945. He arrived with a law degree from the University of Lausanne.
Ananda's return was met with great joy from the Thai people. He worked to heal tensions in the country. One notable event was his visit to Sampheng Lane in Chinatown. This visit helped improve relations between ethnic Chinese and Thai people. Despite his popularity, some observers noted his personal struggles. Louis Mountbatten, a British commander, visited in January 1946. Mountbatten described the king as a lonely and nervous figure. He observed that the young king seemed frightened by his heavy, diamond-studded decorations.
A sudden tragedy ended Ananda's reign. On June 9, 1946, the king was found shot dead in his bedroom. This occurred in the Boromphiman Throne Hall within the Grand Palace.
