Long before the city was built, the Tongva people lived here. They were indigenous to this part of Southern California. Evidence shows they were in this region since 3500 BCE. They had a large village called Hutuukuga. The people there found food from oak trees and sage bushes. They also hunted rabbit and mule deer for meat. They had strong trade links with villages near the coast. Later, the land was part of a large Mexican rancho.

In 1857, fifty German-American families founded the city. They wanted to find a good place to grow grapes. They bought land from Juan Pacífico Ontiveros for $2 per acre. They named the place Annaheim, which means "home by the Santa Ana River."

The name was later changed to Anaheim. For 25 years, it was the top wine producer in California. However, a disease destroyed the grape vines in 1884. After that, farmers began growing walnuts, lemons, and oranges instead. The arrival of the railroad in 1887 helped these new crops grow.

Anaheim has changed many times over the years. In the early 1900s, it was a rural area full of orange groves. As time passed, it became a center for many industries. The city makes things like electronics and aircraft parts. Many people moved there as highways expanded from Los Angeles. By the year 2020, the city had 346,824 people living in it. This makes it the largest city in Orange County. It is also the tenth-largest city in all of California.

In the past, the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL also called Anaheim home from 1980 to 1994.

Long before the city was founded, the Tongva people lived in this region. They are the indigenous people of Southern California. Evidence suggests they have been in this area since 3500 BCE. They had a large village named Hutuukuga. This village was one of the largest in the Tovaangar region. The Tongva people relied on native plants like oak trees and sage bushes for food. They also hunted rabbit and mule deer. They maintained deep trade connections with coastal and inland villages.

In the 1800s, the land was part of a Mexican rancho. This was the Rancho San Juan Cajón de Santa Ana. It was granted to Juan Pacífico Ontiveros in 1837. In 1857, fifty German-American families purchased 1,160 acres from him. They paid $2 per acre to start the community. The group formed the Anaheim Vineyard Company, led by George Hansen. They originally named the settlement Annaheim. This name meant "home by the Santa Ana River" in German. The name was later changed to Anaheim.

The early economy was built on agriculture. For 25 years, Anaheim was the largest wine producer in California. However, a disease infected the grapevines in 1884. This disease destroyed the entire wine industry by 1885. Farmers then switched to growing walnuts, lemons, and oranges. The arrival of the railroad in 1887 helped these crops reach new markets.

Chinese immigrants played a vital role during this time. They planted hundreds of thousands of grapevines and built early railroads. They also excavated the sixteen-mile Cajon Canal. However, the Chinese community declined after the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.

Anaheim has several distinct districts and neighborhoods. The west side features many mid-20th-century tract houses. Downtown Anaheim contains three historic mixed-use districts. The largest of these is the Anaheim Colony. To the south, an "edge city" exists where Anaheim meets Santa Ana, Orange, and Garden Grove. This area includes the Disneyland Resort and the Anaheim Resort district. Another area is the Platinum Triangle. This is a redevelopment district near Angel Stadium. It is planned to feature high-rises and mixed-use streets. Further east, the Anaheim Canyon serves as an industrial district. The easternmost part consists of Anaheim Hills and open land.

In the 20th century, Anaheim transformed from a rural area into an industrial center. It began producing electronics, aircraft parts, and canned fruit. The expansion of highways from Los Angeles helped people move to the area. This dispersal was partly intended to protect populations from atomic threats after World War II. The city also faced environmental challenges. In 1985, a fire occurred at the Fricker Fertilizer Factory. This was a major environmental disaster for Orange County. The fire burned for four days due to toxic chemicals. It released over 80 different chemicals into the air. This caused the evacuation of more than 7,500 people in nearby areas.
