This is a long path of water.
This is a long path of water.
It helps big boats move. It connects a big city to a river. This path is very busy. Many boats sail here every day.
There are many bridges over the water.
Some bridges are for cars. Some are for trains. One bridge is very long for bikes.
People built this path a long time ago. It is still used today. It is a great way to move things.
The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal is a long path of water.
It is in the Netherlands. The canal connects Amsterdam to the Rhine river. This helps big ships move goods. The canal is 72 km long. It is over 100 meters wide. It is also 6 meters deep.
This canal is one of the busiest in the world. In 2016, over 91,000 vessels sailed through it. This included many small boats for fun. The ships carried over 77 million tons of cargo.
People built this canal to replace an older one. The old canal was called the Merwede Canal. It was too small for new, larger ships. Work on the new canal began in 1933. Queen Juliana opened it in 1952.
Many bridges cross the water.
Some bridges carry cars or trains. The Nescio Bridge is for people walking or riding bikes. It is the longest cycle bridge in the country.
Another bridge is the Muiderspoorbrug. It carries a railway line over the canal.
The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal is a very busy waterway in the Netherlands.
Water moves along a path through several different places. The canal goes in a south-easterly direction. It travels through the city of Utrecht. Then it reaches a place called Wijk bij Duurstede. There, it meets the Lek branch of the Rhine. The canal then continues to the river Waal near Tiel. One part of it also connects to the Lek near Nieuwegein. This way, ships have a clear path to travel through the country.
This canal was built to replace an older path. That old path was called the Merwede Canal. It started work in 1883 and opened in 1892. However, ships were getting much larger over time. The Merwede Canal was no longer big enough for them. Engineers made seven different plans to fix this. An engineer named Anton Mussert made the eighth plan. Work on the new canal began in 1933.
Building the canal took a long time to finish. The Second World War slowed down the work. Queen Juliana officially opened the canal on 21 May 1952. As ships grew even larger, the canal had to be widened. This widening work happened between 1965 and 1981. In 2016, 91,495 vessels sailed through the water. This included 5,541 boats used for fun. These ships carried 77,172,454 tons of cargo.
Many different kinds of bridges cross over the water. Some bridges carry cars, like the Amsterdam Bridge. Others carry trains, such as the Muiderspoorbrug. There are even bridges just for people on foot or bikes. The Nescio Bridge is for cyclists and walkers. It is the longest cycle bridge in the Netherlands.
The Amsterdam–Rhine Canal is a vital waterway in the Netherlands.
The canal stretches for a total length of 72 kilometers.
This modern canal was built to replace an older system. The predecessor was the Merwede Canal. Excavation for the Merwede Canal began in 1883. It became operational by 1892. However, the Merwede Canal eventually became inadequate for modern needs. Shipping traffic increased significantly over the years. Furthermore, ships themselves became much larger. This meant the old canal could no longer handle the volume or size of the vessels. Engineers had to find a better way to move goods.
Designing a replacement was a long and difficult process. Starting in 1915, experts produced seven different plans. Finally, an eighth plan was created. This plan was developed by Anton Mussert, an engineer for the provincial water board. Construction on the new Amsterdam–Rhine Canal began in 1933. The section between Utrecht and the Lek Canal was the first to be finished in 1938. The northern part used the widened bed of the old Merwede Canal. The southern part was built entirely new. This new section runs past Houten and Wijk bij Duurstede to Tiel. The Second World War caused delays in the construction process. Queen Juliana officially opened the completed canal on 21 May 1952.
As technology advanced, the canal had to change again. Ships continued to grow even larger than before. To accommodate them, the canal required widening. This major expansion project took place between 1965 and 1981. Even today, work is planned to improve the waterway. Engineers plan to widen the Demka bend to improve safety. This specific project is expected to reach completion by the year 2030. The canal remains a heavy-duty piece of infrastructure that must adapt to the needs of global trade.
The sheer scale of activity on the canal is impressive. In 2016, a total of 91,495 vessels sailed through the waterway. This number included 5,541 recreational vessels used for leisure. These ships carried a massive amount of goods. They transported a total of 77,172,454 tons of cargo in that single year.
Because the canal is so wide, many structures must cross it. There are many different types of bridges for various uses. Some bridges carry road traffic, such as the Amsterdam Bridge or the Zeeburgerrug. Others are part of major highways, like the Muider Bridge on the A1. There are also many railway bridges. The Muiderspoorbrug carries the Amsterdam-Zutphen line. The Demka Railway Bridge carries the Amsterdam-Arnhem line. The Schalkwijk Railway Bridge serves the Utrecht to Boxtel line.
Maintaining the canal also involves managing complex utilities. Electrical cables run near the waterway to provide power. On 17 February 2025, shipping had to stop due to a problem with these cables. A barge became entangled in the electrical cabling. This caused two cables, which carry 150,000 volts, to fall into the water. Shipping was halted so that the cables could be removed safely. This incident highlights the many different systems that must work together around such a busy transport route.
