The American Civil War was a massive conflict within the United States. It lasted from April 12, 1861, to May 26, 1865. The war was fought between the Union, also called the North, and the Confederacy, known as the South.
The origins of the war were deeply rooted in the issue of slavery. Historians agree that slavery was the central cause for the Southern states. A major political battle involved whether slavery would expand into Western territories. As new states joined the Union, the balance of power in Congress was at stake. The North had growing anti-slavery sentiment. Meanwhile, the South feared the total abolition of slavery. This tension reached a breaking point during the election of 1860. Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, won the presidency.

The war officially began with an attack on a federal fort. On April 12, 1861, the Confederacy bombarded Fort Sumter in South Carolina.

In 1863, the goals of the Union changed significantly. On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This document declared that all slaves in rebel states were free. It applied to more than 3.5 million of the 4 million enslaved people in the country. This turned the abolition of slavery into a formal Union war goal. In the West, the Union achieved major victories. They destroyed the Confederate river navy by the summer of 1862. They also seized the city of New Orleans. A successful siege of Vicksburg in 1863 split the Confederacy in two at the Mississippi River.
Military leadership played a vital role in the outcome of the war. General Ulysses S. Grant achieved great success in the Western theater. Because of this, Lincoln promoted him to command all Union armies in 1864. On the Confederate side, General Robert E. Lee led many major campaigns. One notable event was his failed incursion north at the Battle of Gettysburg. The Union also used a naval blockade to tighten control over Confederate ports. This strategy aimed to restrict resources and manpower for the South. General William Tecumseh Sherman led a famous campaign known as the March to the Sea. This movement led to the fall of Atlanta and the capture of Savannah in 1864.
The end of the war came after intense fighting near the Confederate capital. The Siege of Petersburg lasted for ten months and was very significant. Eventually, the Confederates were forced to abandon Richmond. On April 9, 1865, General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House.

The aftermath of the war led to a period called Reconstruction. This was an era focused on rebuilding the nation. The goal was to bring the former Confederate states back into the Union. Leaders also worked to grant civil rights to the four million freed African Americans. The Civil War was also notable for its use of new technology. It was among the first wars to use industrial warfare. This included railroads, the electrical telegraph, and steamships. Ironclad warships and mass-produced weapons were also widely used. These advancements foreshadowed the nature of future world wars. Today, the war remains a major subject of study and debate.
