Others used the cross-sections of the long bones to estimate a mass of approximately 220 kilograms. 

Ambulocetus lived in a very specific environment during the Early Eocene. It inhabited the Indian subcontinent, which at the time had a hot climate. This region featured tropical rainforests and coastal mangroves. 
Understanding the classification of Ambulocetus helps clarify how whales evolved. It belongs to the family Ambulocetidae, which also includes *Himalayacetus* and *Gandakasia*.
