Because the land is so hilly, it is hard to farm. There is not much flat land for crops. Farmers use a terrace system to grow food. These are like giant steps built into the hills. This way, they can use the slopes for cultivation. The islands also have useful natural resources. They produce a little bit of coal. They also have pottery stone found in the ground.
Amakusa has a very interesting history. In the 17th century, a rebellion happened here. This was called the Shimabara rebellion. It was led by Christians in this area. After the rebellion, life was difficult for them. Many people were persecuted for their faith. Some Christians, called Kakure Kirishitan, stayed in Amakusa. They continued to practice their faith in secret.

Amakusa is a series of islands located off the west coast of Kyushu. Kyushu is the southernmost of the four main islands of Japan.
The largest island in this group is named Shimoshima. It measures 26.5 miles in length. At its widest point, it is 13.5 miles across.
Amakusa has a complex religious history involving the Shimabara rebellion. This conflict took place in the 17th century. It was led by Christians living in Amakusa and the neighboring Shimabara Peninsula. Following the rebellion, the local Christians faced severe persecution. However, some Christians survived the difficult times. These people were known as Kakure Kirishitan. They continued to practice their faith in secret despite the dangers.
The islands are also known for their significant mineral resources. Amakusa produces small amounts of coal. It also contains pottery stone. These materials are essential for making traditional ceramics. Potters use these resources to create Hirado ware and Satsuma ware. The quality of Amakusa pottery is so high that the Japanese government recognizes it. Many kilns, which are structures used for firing pottery, remain active on the islands today. The islands continue to export their pottery to other locations.
Local materials play a major role in modern commerce as well. The retail company Muji produces a line of Hakuji home ware. This product is made using traditional techniques. The makers use ground translucent Amakusa stones that are kneaded into clay. This shows how ancient geological resources still connect to modern design. The islands have also produced notable individuals. For example, Hidenoshin Koyama came from this island. He was the builder of Thomas Blake Glover's House in Glover Garden. Members of the Wanima family, Kenta and Ko-shin, also hail from Amakusa.
Traveling to and around the islands involves several different methods. You can reach the islands via the Amakusa Airfield. This airfield is located at the northern end of Shimoshima.
Ferry services provide essential links to other Japanese prefectures. Some ferries connect Amakusa to Kagoshima Prefecture. Others connect the islands to Nagasaki Prefecture. The Shimabara Railway operates an hourly ferry every day. This route runs from Oniike on northern Shimoshima to Kuchinotsu. Kuchinotsu is located at the southern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula. Other specific routes include the Yasuda Sangyo Kisen Co. Ltd. ferry from Tomioka Port to Mogi. Additionally, two ferries from Shinwa and Ushibuka connect Amakusa to Nagashima in Kagoshima.
