Delamétherie gave the mineral the name aluminilite. About thirty years later, François Beudant shortened this name to alunite. This naming process helped scientists communicate more clearly about the mineral.
Alunite deposits are located in many different parts of the world. Extensive mining has occurred in Tuscany, Italy, and in Hungary. Large deposits were also found in Bulahdelah, New South Wales, Australia. In the United States, it is found in the San Juan district of Colorado. It is also present in Goldfield, Nevada, and Red Mountain, Arizona. In Utah, it is found near Marysvale, where it is mined as an ore. Some of these modern deposits were located using airborne and satellite multispectral imaging. In Hungary, the compact varieties are so tough they were used as millstones.
Archaeologists have found interesting connections between alunite and ancient history. In Henan province, China, researchers found ceramic objects and jars from 2000 years ago.
