Most of these shrimp have one very large claw. This claw is called a chela. It is much bigger than the rest of the body. The claw works like a special tool with two parts. One part acts like a hammer. The shrimp pulls the hammer back into a right angle.
Scientists have studied these amazing shrimp for a long time. The family name Alpheidae was used in studies by Coutière in 1899. Researchers like Ritzmann studied how they use special pads to hold tension. Other scientists like Au and Banks measured how loud the snaps are. They found the sound can reach 190 decibels. This makes them compete with whales for the title of loudest animal. Some species even produce a tiny flash of light when the bubble collapses. This is called sonoluminescence.
There are many different groups of these shrimp. The two biggest groups are Alpheus and Synalpheus. Alpheus has over 330 species. Synalpheus has more than 160 species.

When the bubble collapses, it produces a powerful shockwave and intense acoustic pressure. These pressures can reach 218 decibels relative to one micropascal. The collapse can even cause sonoluminescence, which is a short flash of light. This light is not visible to the naked eye and is likely a byproduct of the shockwave. 
There are many different types of shrimp within this family. The two most speciose genera are Alpheus and Synalpheus. Alpheus contains over 330 species, while Synalpheus has more than 160 species. Most snapping shrimp live in tropical or temperate coastal waters, such as coral reefs and seagrass flats. However, the genus Betaeus lives in cold seas. The genus Potamalpheops has a cosmopolitan distribution, meaning it is found almost everywhere, including freshwater caves.
Some species exhibit complex social structures known as eusocial behavior. This is most notable in the genus Synalpheus, where shrimp live in colonies inside sponges. These colonies can consist of over 300 individuals. They are led by a single queen, who is a large female. The colony includes workers that care for the young and soldiers that protect the group. These soldiers use their massive claws for defense. This social organization is similar to the castes found in many insects. 
Many snapping shrimp also engage in mutualistic symbiotic relationships. One famous example involves a partnership with goby fish. The shrimp digs and maintains a burrow for both animals to inhabit. Because the shrimp has limited vision, it uses its antennae to maintain constant contact with the goby. The goby acts as a lookout. If the goby detects danger, it performs a characteristic tail movement. This signal tells both animals to retreat into the safety of the burrow. 
These shrimp are incredibly significant to the ocean's environment. They are considered a major source of sound in the sea. In large colonies, their snapping can actually interfere with sonar and underwater communication. They even compete with large animals like sperm whales and beluga whales for the title of the loudest animal in the ocean. Their sounds are so intense that they can interfere with anti-submarine warfare. This makes the Alpheidae a small but powerful force in the marine world.
