He is often known by the nickname al-Manṣūr, which means "the Victorious." During his time, he served as the chancellor and the hajib, or chamberlain, for the Caliph. Although he held these official titles, he was effectively the ruler of Islamic Iberia. His rise to power transformed the politics of the Iberian Peninsula and the Maghreb. This period is a significant example of how an administrative official can gain total control over a state.

Almanzor was born around the year 939 into a middle-class family of Yemeni Arab origin. His family belonged to the al-Ma'afir tribe and lived in the town of Turrush. They had a history of serving as jurists, which are legal experts. After his father, Abd Allah, died, the family faced economic difficulties. This forced the young man to move to Córdoba to work as a scrivener. A scrivener is a person who writes documents professionally.

He eventually gained the trust of Subh, who was the mother of the royal children. This connection was vital for his career. By 967, he was the director of the mint, where coins are made. In 968, he became the treasurer for vacant inheritances. He also served as the Qadi of Seville and Niebla. These roles allowed him to accumulate significant wealth and influence near the royal family.

In 973, Almanzor took on a major role during a military campaign in the Maghreb.

He served as the High Qadi for Umayyad possessions in North Africa. In this position, he managed the logistics and the economy of the campaign. He was responsible for obtaining the loyalty of local leaders through formal gifts. This experience taught him how to manage both civilian and military personnel. He learned that controlling the organization of an army could lead to political power. He returned from this campaign with a much stronger grasp on how to use the military to his advantage.

When Caliph Al-Hakam II died in 976, a major political crisis began. The new Caliph, Hisham II, was only a young child.

Because the Caliph was a minor, he could not rule the state alone. Almanzor used this situation to seize extraordinary power. He became the chamberlain and took control of the government. While Hisham II remained the official Caliph, he became a figurehead with very little real power. Almanzor used his position to implement deep reforms in both domestic and foreign politics.

To justify his control, Almanzor relied heavily on his religious identity. He was a deeply religious man who promoted the concept of jihad. In this context, he proclaimed jihad in the name of the Caliph to support his actions. This helped him gain the support of Muslim authorities. He also led many successful military campaigns to protect and expand his influence. He conducted numerous incursions into the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. These campaigns were very destructive and temporarily stopped the southward movement of those kingdoms.

His sons, Abd al-Malik al-Muzaffar and Abd al-Rahman Sanchuelo, governed the state until 1009. At the height of his power, the Caliphate stretched across the Iberian Peninsula and parts of the Maghreb.
