Alkynes are a group of tiny building blocks in chemistry. 

One famous alkyne is called acetylene. Scientists also call it ethyne. Acetylene is very useful as a fuel. It gives off a lot of power when it burns. This heat is used in special torches for welding metal. 
There are many different types of alkynes. They can have different shapes. Some have a hydrogen atom at the very end. We call these terminal alkynes. Others have carbon atoms on both sides of the triple bond. These are called internal alkynes. Some alkynes have more than one triple bond. These are called diynes. Scientists can make these parts in many ways. They can use heat or special chemicals to change them.

An example is propyne, also called methylacetylene. Terminal alkynes are mildly acidic. They have pKa values around 25. This makes them much more acidic than alkanes or alkenes. The second type is internal alkynes. These have carbon substituents on both sides of the triple bond. Examples include diphenylacetylene and 3-hexyne. They are also more acidic than alkanes, but less acidic than terminal alkynes.
These molecules can also exist as structural isomers. This happens when a molecule has four or more carbon atoms. The triple bond can move to different positions in the chain. Or, carbon atoms can become substituents instead of part of the main chain. For example, butyne has two isomers: 1-butyne and 2-butyne. Pentynes have three isomers. Hexynes can have as many as seven different structural isomers. This variety allows chemists to create many different substances from the same number of atoms.
History shows how our methods for making these compounds have changed. Classically, acetylene was made through the hydrolysis of calcium carbide. This process used quicklime and coke in an electric arc furnace at 2200 °C. This was important for countries like Germany and China. However, this method uses a lot of energy. Today, most acetylene is produced through the partial oxidation of natural gas. Hundreds of millions of kilograms are produced every year. Another method is thermal cracking of hydrocarbons, which is used to make propyne.
Alkynes are famous for their high energy content. Acetylene has a heat of formation of +227.4 kJ/mol. This means it is thermodynamically unstable compared to its elements. When acetylene burns, the reaction is highly exothermic. This means it releases a massive amount of heat. 
Chemists use many different reactions to transform alkynes. One famous method is the Sonogashira reaction.
