Sisley lived through many different times in his life. In 1870, a war began in France. His father's business failed during this time. Because of this, Sisley had to sell his paintings to buy food. He lived with very little money for most of his life. In 1874, he traveled to England to paint the River Thames. He made nearly twenty paintings of the river near Hampton Court. He also spent time in Wales later in his life.

Alfred Sisley was a prominent French-born British Impressionist painter. He is celebrated for his lifelong dedication to landscape painting. While many Impressionists explored various subjects, Sisley focused almost exclusively on the natural world. He rarely moved into figure painting, which involves depicting human forms. Instead, he sought to capture the essence of scenery through light and atmosphere. His work is recognized for its tranquility and its ability to convey specific moments in time.

To achieve his artistic goals, Sisley utilized a method called en plein air. This French term means painting outdoors rather than in a controlled studio. By working outside, he could observe the transient effects of sunlight directly. This approach allowed him to capture how light changes the appearance of objects. His technique involved using bright colors and broad brushstrokes. At the time, this style was considered highly innovative and unusual. Consequently, his work often differed from the traditional styles the public expected.

Sisley's artistic circle included some of the most famous names in art history. While studying at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts, he met Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. These artists shared a passion for landscape painting and the en plein air method. They gathered at the Café Guerbois, a well-known meeting place for Parisian painters. Together, they pushed the boundaries of what art could represent. Although they were friends, Sisley's style remained more subdued than Monet's. He focused on atmosphere and impressive skies rather than dramatic scenes.

His life was marked by significant financial shifts and personal challenges. Born in Paris to affluent British parents, he initially studied business in London. He returned to Paris in 1861 to pursue art seriously. However, the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 changed his circumstances deeply. His father's silk business failed during the conflict. This forced Sisley to rely entirely on selling his paintings for survival. He lived in poverty for much of his remaining life. His works did not see a major rise in monetary value until after his death.

Despite these hardships, Sisley produced a massive body of work. He is credited with creating approximately 900 oil paintings and 100 pastels. His travels often provided new inspiration for his landscapes. In 1874, he visited southwest of London to paint the River Thames. This trip resulted in nearly twenty paintings of the river near Hampton Court. Later in life, he visited his ancestral home in Great Britain again. During a stay in Wales, he painted at least six oils of the sea and cliffs. He also produced at least eleven oil paintings in Langland Bay.

Many of his most significant works are held in prestigious museums today. For example, the Art Institute of Chicago owns "Street in Moret" and "Sand Heaps." The Musée d'Orsay in Paris displays "The Bridge at Moret-sur-Loing." Some of his paintings have even faced dramatic histories involving theft. The work "Allée des peupliers de Moret" was stolen from a museum three separate times. One theft in 1998 involved a museum curator who was later jailed. These stories highlight the high value and cultural importance of his art.

Sisley's legacy is also tied to the complex history of the 20th century. During the Nazi period from 1933 to 1945, many of his works were looted. These paintings were taken from Jewish art collectors as part of a massive theft. Some of these works, such as "Winter Landscape," have still not been found. The German Lost Art Foundation currently lists 24 works by Sisley. In recent years, there have been efforts to restore stolen art to original families. These events connect his beautiful landscapes to the broader history of global conflict and justice.
