He was also elected as an Honorary member and later a Fellow of that same society. His most famous achievement came in 1966 when he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. The Nobel Committee recognized him for discovering and developing optical methods to study Hertzian resonances in atoms. He also received the Wilhelm Exner Medal in 1979.
His influence extended into several international scientific societies and organizations. In 1976, he was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society. In 1978, he became a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also served as the president of the board for the Institut d'optique théorique et appliquée. Kastler was a person of many diverse interests and convictions. He was not only a man of science, but also a poet who wrote in German. In 1971, he published a work titled "Europe, ma patrie: Deutsche Lieder eines französischen Europäers." This title translates to "Europe, my fatherland: German songs of a French European." Additionally, he was a signatory of an agreement to call for a convention to draft a world constitution. This eventually led to the World Constituent Assembly, which drafted the Constitution for the Federation of Earth.
In his private life, Kastler married Elise Cosset, a teacher, in December 1924. They had three children named Daniel, Claude-Yves, and Mireille. His sons followed in his footsteps by becoming teachers, while his daughter Mireille became a doctor. Professor Kastler passed away on January 7, 1984, in Bandol, France. His life remains a significant example of how scientific discovery and humanitarian concern can go hand in hand.
