He spent his career challenging how power and money were used in the Russian government. Navalny is best known for founding the Anti-Corruption Foundation, or FBK, in 2011. Through this organization, he used social media to reach millions of people. His team published detailed investigations into the actions of high-ranking officials. He famously labeled the ruling United Russia party as a "party of crooks and thieves." This nickname became a widely recognized way to describe his political views. His work earned him international recognition, including the Sakharov Prize for human rights.

Navalny's early life was shaped by his diverse heritage and education. He was born in 1976 during the era of the Soviet Union. His mother was Russian, and his father was Ukrainian. Navalny often described his identity as being equally connected to both cultures. He grew up in Obninsk and spent summers in Ukraine, where he learned the language. He earned a law degree from the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia in 1998. Later, he studied securities and exchanges at the Financial University. In 2010, he participated in the Yale World Fellows program at Yale University. This program helped him build a global network of emerging leaders.

Before becoming a full-time political leader, Navalny built a career in law. He worked as a corporate lawyer for various Russian companies starting in 1998. By 2009, he had become a registered advocate in the Kirov Oblast. He eventually moved to Moscow and joined the Moscow advocate's chamber. His early political involvement began with the Yabloko party in 2000. He held several leadership roles within Yabloko, including Chief of Staff for its Moscow branch. However, he later left the party after criticizing its leadership and election results. He wanted to create a more democratic way for people to participate in politics.

Navalny's activism often led to direct confrontations with the Russian state.

In 2011, he was arrested following large protests against electoral fraud. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail for defying a government official. In 2013, he ran for the position of Mayor of Moscow. He achieved a significant result, earning 27.2% of the vote and placing second. Despite this popularity, authorities barred him from running in the 2018 presidential election. He also faced multiple criminal charges for embezzlement in 2013 and 2014. Many international observers viewed these legal cases as politically motivated attempts to remove him from politics.

A major turning point in his life occurred in August 2020. Navalny was hospitalized after being poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent. Novichok is a highly dangerous chemical substance. He was medically evacuated to Berlin, Germany, to receive specialized treatment. While in Germany, he accused President Vladimir Putin of being responsible for the attack. Investigations implicated agents from the Federal Security Service in the incident. After recovering, Navalny returned to Russia in January 2021. He was immediately detained by authorities upon his arrival.

His return to Russia led to a long period of imprisonment.

His previous suspended sentences were replaced with actual prison time. In 2022, he received an additional nine-year sentence for embezzlement and contempt of court. Amnesty International described this specific trial as a sham. In August 2023, he was given another 19-year sentence on extremism charges. During his time in prison, he was moved to a high-security facility. He was eventually transferred to a corrective colony in the Arctic Circle. This location, in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, is known for its extremely harsh environment.
