Borodin did important work in the science of chemistry. He studied how different parts of matter react with each other. He was one of the first to show a process called nucleophilic substitution. He also helped discover the aldol reaction. This is a way that certain small molecules join together. He worked in many places, including Heidelberg University in Germany. He also spent time working in the city of Pisa. In Saint Petersburg, he was a professor at the Medical-Surgical Academy.
His life began in Saint Petersburg in 1833. His father was a Georgian nobleman named Luka Stepanovich Gedevanishvili. His mother was a Russian woman named Evdokia Konstantinovna Antonova. Because of his birth, he was officially registered as the son of a man named Porfiry Borodin. This is how he got his Russian last name. His biological father helped him by providing money and a large house. Borodin studied with private tutors at home since he could not go to a normal school. He later studied medicine and science in Europe. 
Borodin wrote many famous pieces of music. He wrote Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 2. He also wrote a famous opera called Prince Igor. This opera is set in the 12th century. It tells a story about a Russian prince and a group called the Polovtsians. One very famous part is the Polovtsian Dances. He also wrote two string quartets for small groups of instruments. He was an enthusiastic cellist who loved playing chamber music. Many of his works were finished by his friends after he died.
Borodin's work still reaches us in many ways today. His music was used in a 1953 musical called Kismet. This show includes songs like "Stranger in Paradise." He also conducted research on halocarbons in Pisa, Italy. One of his notable achievements was describing the first nucleophilic displacement of chlorine by fluorine in benzoyl chloride. He also demonstrated the radical halodecarboxylation of aliphatic carboxylic acids in 1861. This work was later expanded by Heinz and Cläre Hunsdiecker into a general method. This process is known today as the Hunsdiecker–Borodin reaction.
Beyond substitution, Borodin made major contributions to the study of aldehydes. He is credited as the co-discoverer of the aldol reaction. This is a process involving the self-condensation of small aldehydes. Borodin investigated the condensation of valerian aldehyde and oenanth aldehyde, which was reported by von Richter in 1869. In 1872, he also took a leadership role in medical education. He established medical courses for women in Saint Petersburg. He taught at the School of Medicine for Women until 1885. His scientific work continued until his final years, including a 1875 publication on amide reactions.
Borodin's early life in Saint Petersburg was shaped by complex family circumstances. 
In the realm of music, Borodin's works are celebrated for their lyricism and rich harmonies. 
Borodin was also a dedicated performer of chamber music. He was an enthusiastic cellist and enjoyed playing in small ensembles. His two string quartets are considered masterpieces of the form.
