One of Haller's most famous contributions was his study of how bodies react to stimuli. In 1752, at the University of Göttingen, he published a thesis regarding two distinct properties of organs. He identified these properties as "sensibility" and "irritability." He argued that nerves possess sensibility, which allows a person to perceive contact or touch. In contrast, he found that muscles possess irritability. This means a muscle fiber can shorten on its own when excited by a foreign body, even without a person perceiving it. In 1757, he conducted experiments to prove the difference between nerve impulses and muscular contractions.

Haller's work in botany was equally influential and focused on the study of plants.

He was a pioneer in using herbaria, which are collections of preserved plant specimens, to study how plants vary. He purposely collected plants from different habitats and developmental stages. During a tour of Savoy, Baden, and Swiss cantons in 1728, he began a collection that became the basis for his work on Swiss flora. While he did not use the binomial nomenclature system popularized by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, his taxonomic work remained vital. His impact was so great that Linnaeus named the South African plant genus *Halleria* in his honor.

His scientific education began in Bern and took him across Europe. After his father died in 1721, Haller began studying medicine in Biel. He attended the University of Tübingen in 1723 to study under Elias Rudolph Camerarius Jr. and Johann Duvernoy. In 1725, he moved to the University of Leiden to study under the famous Herman Boerhaave. He graduated in May 1727. For his thesis, he successfully proved that a structure claimed to be a salivary duct was actually a blood vessel. He later studied mathematics in Basel and anatomy in Paris under Jacob Winslow.

Haller held a prestigious position at the University of Göttingen for seventeen years.

In 1736, King George II appointed him to a chair covering medicine, anatomy, botany, and surgery. During this time, he organized a botanical garden, an anatomical theatre, and a museum. He also contributed twelve thousand articles to a monthly journal. His professional honors included being a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1743 and an ennobled member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1747. Despite these successes, he eventually resigned in 1753 to return to his native Bern.

Beyond the laboratory, Haller was a prolific writer and a man of many interests.

He wrote an epic poem of four thousand lines regarding the origin of the Swiss confederations. He also wrote a famous poem called *Ode sur les Alpes* in 1773. This work is noted as one of the earliest signs of an appreciation for mountain landscapes. He even wrote philosophical romances to explore different types of government. His diverse interests touched on religion, politics, and even the complex concept of eternity, which was discussed by philosophers like Hegel and Kant.

In his later years, Haller's health began to fail. He used opium to support his strength, a practice he wrote about in a 1776 paper. This excessive use of the drug is believed to have hastened his death in 1777. He left behind eight children, some of whom, like his son Gottlieb Emanuel, also became noted writers and botanists. His legacy survives through his many scientific texts and his fundamental role in defining how we understand the living body.
