It acts as a tall barrier between the Caspian Sea and the Iranian plateau. The range is divided into three main sections. These are the Western, Central, and Eastern Alborz mountains. The Western part is often called the Talysh. The Central part runs from west to east along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Finally, the Eastern part runs northeast toward the Khorasan region.

Nature looks very different depending on which side of the mountains you visit. The northern slopes are very wet and lush. They are home to the Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests. You might see beech forests in the middle or oak forests higher up.

In contrast, the southern slopes are much drier and warmer. These areas are often semiarid or even arid. In these high, dry places, you will mostly find juniper trees and small shrubs like pistachio or almond.

Many amazing animals live among these peaks and forests. You might spot a Persian leopard or a Syrian brown bear. Other animals include the red fox, the Indian wolf, and the Persian fallow deer. Even birds like the eagle and the griffon vulture fly above the ridges. Long ago, the extinct Caspian tiger also lived in this mountain range. These animals find homes in the different zones created by the mountains.

Humans have a long history with this land. Archaeologists found stone tools in places like the Buzeir and Kiaram caves. These tools suggest that Neanderthals may have lived in the northwest area. Evidence of modern humans was found at a riverside site called Garm Roud. This site dates back about 30,000 years. The mountains are also famous for their high peaks. Mount Damavand is the highest point in Iran at 5,610.0 meters. It is the 12th most prominent peak in the whole world.

Today, the Alborz is a place for both nature and sport. Because the winters are so snowy, people visit to go skiing. There are several ski resorts across the range that people say are among the best. You can even see the mountains from the busy city of Tehran. ] The mountains connect the sea to the dry plateau. They remain a very important part of the landscape in Iran.

The Alborz is a massive mountain range located in northern Iran.

It serves as a significant natural barrier between the Caspian Sea and the Iranian plateau. This range is part of a much larger system called the Alpide belt. The Alborz stretches from the border of Azerbaijan along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. It runs northeast until it merges with the Aladagh Mountains. In the northeast, it borders the Kopet Dag mountain ridge near Khorasan.

Geologists divide the range into three distinct sections. The Western Alborz, also known as the Talysh, runs south-southeast along the western Caspian coast. The Central Alborz runs from west to east along the entire southern coast of the sea. This central section contains the most famous peaks. The Eastern Alborz runs northeast toward the Khorasan region.

Each section has different rock types and geological histories that shape the landscape.

The formation of these mountains was caused by massive tectonic movements. The Tethys Sea closed as the Arabian plate collided with the Iranian plate. At the same time, the Eurasian plate moved clockwise toward the Iranian plate. This movement pressed the Iranian plate from both sides. These collisions caused the folding of various rock layers. This process, known as the Alpine orogeny, created the mountains during the Miocene epoch. Volcanic activity also played a role in the range's development. Eocene volcanism occurred in the southwestern and south-central parts of the Alborz.

The geology of the range is quite complex and varied. The mountains consist of sedimentary series dating from the Upper Devonian to the Oligocene. Most of the range features Jurassic limestone over a granite core. Some areas contain thick Devonian sandstones and Jurassic shales with coal seams. Marine conditions in the past left behind Carboniferous and Permian limestone strata. In the Eastern Alborz, the far eastern section is made of Mesozoic rocks. The western part of that same section is primarily Paleozoic. Precambrian rocks appear near the city of Gorgan and in small amounts in the central range.

The climate and environment change drastically depending on the mountain slope. The northern slopes are humid and support lush greenery. This area contains the Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests. Vegetation here grows in distinct zones. Hyrcanian forests grow on the lowest levels. Beech forests occupy the middle zone, while oak forests grow in higher regions. The wild cypress is a dominant plant in some valleys. In contrast, the southern slopes are semiarid or arid. These areas have low precipitation and few trees. Juniper is common in high, inaccessible areas. You might also find pistachio, maple, and almond shrubs here.

Many unique animals inhabit these different ecological zones. You might find the Persian leopard, the Indian wolf, or the Syrian brown bear. Other residents include the bezoar ibex, red fox, and Persian fallow deer. Birds like the eagle, the buzzard, and the griffon vulture fly above the peaks. The extinct Caspian tiger once lived in this region as well. Humans have also been linked to this land for a very long time. Archaeologists found evidence of early human groups in the late Lower Paleolithic period. The Darband Cave in Gilan Province shows evidence of these early people. Fossils of cave bears and brown bears were also found there.

Modern human presence is documented at the Garm Roud site in Mazandaran. This site dates back approximately 30,000 years. Today, the Alborz is a major destination for tourism and sport. The snowy winters make it perfect for skiing. Many people consider the ski resorts here to be among the best in the world. ] The highest point is Mount Damavand. It reaches 5,610.0 meters in height. This makes it the highest mountain in Iran. It is also the 12th most prominent peak in the world. In Asia, it is the second most prominent peak after Mount Everest.
