Albert Michelson was a famous scientist. 

Albert worked for the U.S. Navy. He even studied at the Naval Academy. He used a spinning mirror to measure light. This was a very hard task. He had to be very careful. He wanted his numbers to be perfect. He even checked his measuring tape to be sure.
In 1887, he did a famous test. He worked with a man named Edward Morley. This was the Michelson–Morley experiment. It helped scientists learn about how light travels.
Albert won a very big prize. It was the Nobel Prize in Physics. He was the first American to win a science Nobel. He also helped start physics departments at two universities. He lived a long life. He died in California when he was 78 years old.

He became a physics instructor there before studying more in Europe. He visited many famous universities in Germany and France. 
Many important things happened during his career. In 1879, he measured the speed of light in air. He found it was about 299,910 kilometers per second. In 1907, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He was the first American to win a Nobel in science. He also helped start physics departments at two schools. These were the Case School of Applied Science and the University of Chicago. He worked at the University of Chicago until 1929. 
His work connects to how we understand space today. In 1887, he and Edward Morley did a famous experiment. They tried to find something called the luminiferous ether. They did not find it, which was a big discovery. Later, he used special tools to measure the size of stars. He also measured how far apart certain stars were. His ideas helped support the theories of Albert Einstein. Even after he died in 1931, his work helped scientists keep learning.

Michelson's dedication to repeated measurements helped him apply early statistical principles to reduce variability in his data.
One of the most significant moments in science history occurred in 1887. Michelson collaborated with Edward Morley to perform the Michelson–Morley experiment. They were searching for evidence of the luminiferous ether, a substance once thought to carry light waves. However, the experiment failed to detect any such ether. This surprising result had a massive impact on physics. It helped provide the groundwork for Albert Einstein's theories of special and general relativity. Other physicists, such as Dayton Miller and Hendrik Lorentz, also used similar optical tools to study these ideas.
Michelson continued his work on light speed using much larger scales. In 1920, he planned a massive measurement using the Mount Wilson Observatory. He used a baseline extending 22 miles to Lookout Mountain. This required two years of careful measurement using invar tapes. Despite challenges like forest fire smoke and a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in 1925, he published a value of 299,796 ± 4 km/s. 
In his final years, Michelson sought to eliminate atmospheric interference entirely. He began a project in 1929 to measure light in an evacuated tube.
