Michelson had a very interesting life journey. He was born in 1852 in a place called Strzelno. At that time, it was in the Kingdom of Prussia. His family moved to the United States when he was only two. He grew up in mining towns in California and Nevada. Later, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy. He became a physics instructor there before studying more in Europe. He visited many famous universities in Germany and France.

Many important things happened during his career. In 1879, he measured the speed of light in air. He found it was about 299,910 kilometers per second. In 1907, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He was the first American to win a Nobel in science. He also helped start physics departments at two schools. These were the Case School of Applied Science and the University of Chicago. He worked at the University of Chicago until 1929.

Measuring the speed of light requires incredible precision because light moves so quickly. Michelson used a method involving a rotating mirror to track its movement.

The process began with a light source directed toward a rotating mirror through a slit. This mirror would reflect the light toward a second, fixed mirror placed at a perpendicular angle. The light would then bounce back from the fixed mirror to the rotating one. Finally, the light returned to the original plate. By measuring the distance between mirrors, the radius, and the displacement of the light, Michelson could calculate the velocity. He was extremely careful to reduce systematic errors. For example, he even checked his 100-foot steel measuring tape against an official standard to ensure accuracy.

In 1879, Michelson conducted formal experiments at the U.S. Naval Academy. He built a special frame structure along the north sea wall to house his machinery. His results showed the speed of light in air was approximately 299,910 ± 50 kilometers per second. He later estimated the speed in a vacuum to be roughly 299,792.458 kilometers per second. These early measurements were refined over many years. He worked closely with Simon Newcomb, who also conducted studies on light speed. Michelson's dedication to repeated measurements helped him apply early statistical principles to reduce variability in his data.

One of the most significant moments in science history occurred in 1887. Michelson collaborated with Edward Morley to perform the Michelson–Morley experiment. They were searching for evidence of the luminiferous ether, a substance once thought to carry light waves. However, the experiment failed to detect any such ether. This surprising result had a massive impact on physics. It helped provide the groundwork for Albert Einstein's theories of special and general relativity. Other physicists, such as Dayton Miller and Hendrik Lorentz, also used similar optical tools to study these ideas.

Michelson continued his work on light speed using much larger scales. In 1920, he planned a massive measurement using the Mount Wilson Observatory. He used a baseline extending 22 miles to Lookout Mountain. This required two years of careful measurement using invar tapes. Despite challenges like forest fire smoke and a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in 1925, he published a value of 299,796 ± 4 km/s.

He also used astronomical interferometers to measure the diameters of stars and the distance between binary stars.

In his final years, Michelson sought to eliminate atmospheric interference entirely. He began a project in 1929 to measure light in an evacuated tube.

He worked with Francis G. Pease and Fred Pearson at the Irvine Ranch in California. They used a 1.6 km tube that was 3 feet in diameter. By using multiple reflections, they increased the light path to 5 miles. This allowed them to measure light in an almost perfect vacuum. Michelson passed away in 1931, but his work continued to influence the scientific community for decades.
