Becoming a leader at a young age was not easy. Ahmad Tajuddin became Sultan on 11 September 1924. He was only eleven years old at the time. His father, Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam II, had died unexpectedly. Because he was a child, a Council of Regency helped him. This group included Pengiran Bendahara Pengiran Anak Abdul Rahman and Pengiran Anak Haji Muhammad Yasin. They helped rule for seven years until he was older.
Ahmad Tajuddin was a very curious leader. He wanted to learn about the world outside of Brunei. He received English lessons from a tutor named Mr. H.F. Stalley. In 1932, he sailed to England to see western civilization. He was the first Sultan to explore the western world so much. He stayed in England for about ten months. This trip helped him see how other places were changing.
His personal life also helped connect different lands. In 1934, he married Tengku Raihani. She was the daughter of the Sultan of Selangor. They had a wedding ceremony at Istana Mahkota Puri in Klang. Their marriage helped make the bond between the two royal families stronger.
Throughout his life, the Sultan fought for his people. He wanted Brunei to have more control over its own money. He also wanted more political power for the Sultanate. He worked to make the country more independent from Britain. These ideas were very new for his time. His work helped lead toward Brunei becoming fully independent in 1984.

Ahmad Tajuddin was born on 22 August 1912. He was the eldest son of Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam II. His father died unexpectedly at the age of 35. Because of this, Ahmad Tajuddin became Sultan on 11 September 1924. He was only eleven years old when he ascended the throne. During his childhood, a Council of Regency managed the country. This council included Pengiran Bendahara Pengiran Anak Abdul Rahman and Pengiran Anak Haji Muhammad Yasin. They served as joint Regents for seven years until he reached adulthood.
His education was a mix of palace traditions and Western instruction. He was taught by Cikgu Salleh Haji Masri, a famous freedom fighter. He also received English lessons from a British instructor named Mr. H.F. Stalley. At age fourteen, he began formal English instruction. In 1932, he sailed to the United Kingdom. He stayed in England for about ten months to observe Western civilization. He was the first Sultan in history to explore the Western world so extensively.
Ahmad Tajuddin’s relationship with British officials was often complicated. During his early years, his perceived timidity allowed British Residents to hold more authority. However, as he grew older, he became more assertive. He expressed his discontent with the political system by abstaining from State Council meetings. He wanted the Sultanate to have more financial and political autonomy. He also supported a new political confederation over northern Borneo. These ideas were innovative for his time. They foreshadowed the political processes that eventually led to Brunei's independence in 1984.
His personal life also helped create important regional connections. In 1934, he married Tengku Raihani. She was the daughter of the Sultan of Selangor, Alauddin Sulaiman Shah. They held their wedding ceremony at Istana Mahkota Puri in Klang.
Despite the wealth from oil, the Sultan grew uneasy about how it was distributed. He encouraged the British government to ease financial regulations for the people of Brunei. To manage his influence, the British increased his living allowance. It rose from $1,000 to $1,500 in 1934, and again by $500 in 1938. His coronation was a major event that took place much later than expected. It began with him reciting the Qur'an on 9 November 1939. The full ceremony finally occurred on 17 March 1940.
The Sultan's legacy is tied to the modernization of Brunei. He navigated a difficult path between traditional royal roles and British colonial rule. His efforts to seek autonomy helped set the stage for future generations. He passed away on 4 June 1950. He was succeeded by his younger brother, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III.
