The military sprayed over 20 million liters of Agent Orange. They used helicopters, low-flying planes, trucks, and boats. By 1971, about 12 percent of South Vietnam had been sprayed. This caused huge damage to the land. Many forests were destroyed, and it became very hard for new trees to grow. Some areas had toxin levels hundreds of times higher than what is considered safe.

While these chemicals were intended to control vegetation, Agent Orange contained a highly toxic contaminant. This contaminant was a dioxin compound called 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, or TCDD.

TCDD was present in trace amounts, typically between 2 and 3 parts per million. However, even these small amounts caused significant biological effects. If Agent Orange is not bound to soil or plants, it dries quickly and breaks down in sunlight within hours or days.

Despite its quick breakdown in the air, the TCDD contaminant is a persistent organic pollutant. TCDD is fat-soluble, meaning it can accumulate easily within the food chain. It enters living bodies through ingestion or direct physical contact. Once inside a body, TCDD binds to a protein called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, or AhR. This protein then moves into the cell nucleus. Once there, it influences gene expression, which is the process by which cells read instructions from DNA. This mechanism is why the chemical is so dangerous to biological systems.

The development of these chemicals began during World War II. The United States and the United Kingdom sought to create herbicidal weapons. In 1943, a botanist named Arthur Galston studied these substances at the University of Illinois. He was originally researching ways to make soybeans flower and fruit earlier. He discovered that while certain chemicals could help crops, higher concentrations would cause defoliation. Over 20 million liters of Agent Orange were applied during this period. By 1971, approximately 12 percent of the total area of South Vietnam had been sprayed. The concentration used was often 13 times higher than the recommended rate for domestic agricultural use.

The consequences of this spraying were vast and devastating. In South Vietnam, an estimated 2 million acres of agricultural land were destroyed. The campaign caused the loss of 60 percent of upland and mangrove forests. This environmental damage is often described by academics as ecocide. The loss of tree cover made reforestation difficult and sharply reduced animal species diversity. In some regions, the concentration of TCDD in soil and water was hundreds of times higher than the levels considered safe by the EPA.

Human health was also severely impacted by exposure. The government of Vietnam states that up to four million people were exposed to the defoliant. They estimate that up to three million people have suffered illnesses. The Vietnamese Red Cross estimates that one million people were disabled or faced health problems. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified increased rates of birth defects among children of exposed veterans. U.S. veterans also faced higher rates of leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and other cancers. These health issues led to numerous legal actions and lawsuits seeking compensation for damages.
