Its color also shifts from green to yellow or brown as it matures.
Scientists have worked for decades to classify these trees correctly. In 1948, botanists John Theodore Buchholz and Netta Elizabeth Gray first used Afrocarpus as a section within the Podocarpus genus. Later, in 1989, Christopher Nigel Page reclassified the group. He raised Afrocarpus to the status of a full genus. This change moved several species out of Podocarpus and Nageia. His work was supported by more recent studies. In 2009, one researcher suggested only two species existed because the variations seemed continuous. However, the Gymnosperm Database currently accepts all five recognized species. 
There are five distinct species that make up this genus. Afrocarpus falcatus, known as the Outeniqua yellowwood, is the largest. It typically grows between 10 and 25 meters, but it can reach heights of 60 meters. Other species include Afrocarpus dawei, which lives in the highlands of East Africa. Afrocarpus gracilior, the East African yellowwood, is often used in gardens for hedges or screens. Afrocarpus mannii, or the Pinheiro de São Tomé, is found on São Tomé Island. Finally, Afrocarpus usambarensis grows in regions like Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania.
The history of these trees is tied to the movement of the Earth. Afrocarpus is associated with the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana.
