They are often called "America's Greatest Rock and Roll Band." The group plays a style known as blues-based hard rock. This sound incorporates elements of pop rock, heavy metal, glam metal, and rhythm and blues. The quintet consists of lead vocalist Steven Tyler and bassist Tom Hamilton. They also include drummer Joey Kramer and guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford. Their music has inspired many different rock artists throughout history.

The band formed through the merging of two different musical groups. Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton were originally members of the Jam Band. This group focused on free-form and blues music. In 1970, the Jam Band played a gig in New Hampshire. Steven Tyler and Joey Kramer were also there. Tyler wanted to combine the two groups into one new band. He insisted on being the frontman and lead vocalist rather than playing drums.

The members moved into a house in Boston to rehearse. They eventually chose the name Aerosmith. Joey Kramer suggested the name after seeing art on a Harry Nilsson album. This name was different from their earlier ideas like "The Hookers."

Aerosmith began their professional career by securing a record deal with Columbia Records. In 1972, they paid for their own spot on a bill at Max's Kansas City. This helped them catch the attention of Clive Davis, the president of Columbia. They released their self-titled debut album in January 1973. This album established their signature blues rock sound. The song "Dream On" became one of their earliest hits.

The songwriting team of Tyler and Perry was sometimes called the "Toxic Twins."

Internal struggles caused the band to face difficult years. Drug addiction and internal conflict led to Joe Perry leaving in 1979. Brad Whitford left the group in 1981. The band struggled during this period, and their 1982 album failed to match their earlier success. However, both Perry and Whitford returned to the lineup in 1984.
