These systems use thick cables to stay up high. One or two cables stay still to act as a track. These are called track cables. A third moving cable is called a haulage rope. This rope provides propulsion, which means it gives the cabin power to move. The cabin is gripped tightly to this moving rope. This is different from a gondola lift. Gondolas use a cable that moves in a continuous loop. Trams simply shuttle back and forth between two stations.

How does the tramway actually work? Most systems are reversible. This means they move back and forth between two ends. An electric motor drives the haulage rope loop. Often, a tramway uses a two-car system called a jig-back system. One large electric motor sits at the bottom of the line. This motor pulls one cabin down the mountain. The weight of that cabin helps pull the other cabin up. The two cabins sit at opposite ends of the cable loop. They pass each other in the middle of the span.

People have been using cable lifts for a very long time. A man named Fausto Veranzio designed the first lift. However, the first working tram was built in 1644. Adam Wybe built it in Gdańsk, Poland. It did not use steel cables back then. Instead, it was moved by horses to carry soil. This helped build defenses over a river. Later, Germany built a second lift 230 years later. That one used iron wire cables instead of rope.

Tramways have many different jobs in our world. In the early 1900s, they were used for mining. They carried ore from high mountains to mills below. You can still see these in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Some trams are huge and carry many people. The Vanoise Express in France carries 200 people in one cabin. The Shinhotaka Ropeway in Japan carries 121 people. Some trams even have two floors. The CabriO in Switzerland has an open-air top floor for 30 people.

Today, we see tramways in cities and mountains. Many people use them for sight-seeing in the Alps. Others use them as public transport to get to work. The Roosevelt Island Tramway in New York City was a pioneer. It was the first tram in North America used by commuters. The Portland Aerial Tram opened in January 2007. In Medellin, Colombia, people use the Metrocable to travel. Even in Israel, the Rakavlit cable car helps people move.

This means the cabins shuttle back and forth between two fixed terminals. Because the cabins are fixed to the moving cable, they cannot be decoupled during operation. While they offer lower line capacities and longer wait times than gondolas, they are highly effective for long spans and heavy loads.

The mechanism of an aerial tramway involves three primary components: track cables, a haulage rope, and cabins. The track cables are stationary and provide the necessary support for the weight of the cabins. To move the cabins, a third cable called a haulage rope is used for propulsion. This rope is driven by an electric motor and is connected to the cabin's truck, which is the wheel set that rolls along the track cables. In many two-car systems, a "jig-back" method is used. A large electric motor is typically located at the bottom of the line. This motor pulls one cabin down, and the weight of that descending cabin helps pull the other cabin up the mountain. In urban environments, they provide essential public transportation. The 1976 Roosevelt Island Tramway in New York City was a pioneer, serving as the first North American tramway used by commuters. Other modern examples include the Metrocable in Medellin, Colombia, and the Portland Aerial Tram in Oregon, which opened in 2007.

These systems are capable of incredible feats of engineering. The Wings of Tatev in Armenia is the world's longest reversible cable car line of one section.

In terms of elevation, the Mérida cable car in Venezuela is known as the highest lift currently operational, reaching an altitude of 3,188 meters. Other records include the Masada cableway in Israel, which features the world's lowest station. From moving heavy ore in the 1900s to providing high-tech transit in modern cities, the aerial tramway remains a vital tool for navigating difficult terrain.
