Early colonial life faced many challenges. The colony was built on ideas from Edward Gibbon Wakefield. He wanted to create a colony of free immigrants. This system used land sales to fund the arrival of working-class emigrants. Because it was a free colony, there was no initial provision for a gaol. However, crime occurred early on. A murder and several attempted murders happened in March 1838. This led to the creation of the South Australian Police Force in April 1838. The first person to be hanged in South Australia was Michael Magee in May 1838.
