The first person to be hanged in South Australia was Michael Magee in May 1838. 
Today, Adelaide is a major global city. It is classified as a Gamma + level global city. This means it links economic regions to the world economy. The city is a huge destination for travel and festivals. It hosts the Adelaide Fringe, which is the world's second largest annual arts festival. 

The city has many modern industries and high rankings. It has strong food and wine industries. It also has large defence and manufacturing operations. The emerging space sector is growing there too. The Australian Space Agency is headquartered in Adelaide. 
Adelaide is known for its high quality of life. It has one of the world's largest foreign-born populations. For much of the 21st century, it has ranked in the top ten most liveable cities globally. In 2021, it was the most liveable city in Australia. It was also ranked third in the world.
